Plus I doubt eating euthanized deer is very healthy (the article mentions one town euthanized 100 of them).

If they use drugs to euthanize them then there is going to be a problem, if they use a stun gun, sledge hammer or just slit the throat then the meat would be as good or better than that harvested by hunters.

And, all this talk about getting rid of the gaminess of the meat is ridiculous, the best part about eating game is it's unique taste, sure, add a few spices or marinade the meat before cooking but don't use so much as to get rid of the wild game taste.

The great thing about game meat is that it doesn't even need spices to taste awesome, it is one of those things the town could have even used as a fundraiser food and just give the money to a soupkitchen, probably get a lot more out of it that way than simply give away the food.

nothing beats a nice roast of venison or BBQ'd deer ribs. Salt and pepper ,,,and maybe some garlic powder is all that is needed for me

Scape Scape:
Deer = rabbits.

Except the deer are road hazards.

So are skateboarders. I'd rather have the deer.

Venison is great meat. It certainly is a waste to just toss it. Preferably it should go to Charities, but not everybody likes it. At least give it out to anybody who wants it in the local community.

Are they at least going to make the meat available?

Good point. Meat should be harvested from the cull and go to food banks. They should do the same with those long eared rats(I know, I know, rabbits aren't rodents) at UVic.

As for the deer being a danger to dogs. The only dogs that need to fear the tiny deer found around Victoria are those foofy little purse rats.

Hey Woofer. JFYI dogs aren't rodents .

What's crazy here is that public money is being spent on the cull instead of just issuing hunting licenses and having willing hunters pay for the privilege of hunting the deer and then keeping the meat instead of wasting it.

For the record I am not a hunter.

Hunters aren't always welcome within city limits.

Great idea. Hunters in Oak Bay.

Hey, if I didn't mind all the Brits I'm sure the hunters won't mind either.

The locals may not like the idea of all these rednecks running around town with their .458 Winchester and .375 H@H magnums loosing off rounds at the local deer population!

If it gets in the way, kill it... Sickening really. Hope the meat isn't wasted.

So instead you have paid trappers (aka: hunters) going around snaring deer and then shooting them with bolt guns.

That's the approved method according to the article. Again, you people* are paying someone to do something for which lots of folks would be happy to pay the Province.

*Me, too if this is coming out of Vic property taxes.

Because it's soooo much better to have hunters wandering around Oak Bay and Esquimalt.

Wow.

One thing you should be aware of Bart is there are rules and regulations in place which prohibit the use of firearms and hunting in all populated areas here.
