An armed populace might be a detterent to a criminal, who gives some thought to the act he is going to commit. I don't think there was much thought going on in this guy's brain bucket. His demeanour before, during and after the attack points strongly at a schizophrenic who was experiencing a psychotic break(whether related to an illness or the result of a chemical).

Like so many have said, almost no one could have prevented this attack or the victim's death. Everyone was snoozing on the bus. You don't get on a bus in Canada expecting this kind of crap. If we all had to maintain the level of vigilance that some here expect us to have, what kind of life would that be? Making sure you and yours are safe before aiding a stranger isn't cowardice, it's instinctive.

If this was a bus load of combat trained marksmen(or women) in Israel, the killer would have been toast soon after his victim expired. However, this was a bus full of seniors, young people and children in western Canada on their way to and from holidays. Too many what ifs are being bandied about.

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Hurley, I just didn't care, to be honest.

That's the first correct thing you've said in this whole thread.

You can't prove that a gun on the bus would have helped anyone. There was only the one victim, and by any account, he was beyond saving by the time anyone figured out what was happening. The attacker was trapped on the bus by people outside. So any more force could only possibly have led to more people injured and / or dead.

You tried to make a point about serial killers and fucked it up by posting the wrong picture.

You tried to make a point about bystander effect, which clearly didn't happen in this case, and didn't even happen in the case that supposedly typifies it: Kitty Genovese.

You tried to hand the credit for all of our present law and order on this magical thing called a gun, but crime is higher in your country than mine despite more guns in yours than mine. And as Derby pointed out, it's not even clear that there was more crime before guns were as prevalent as they are now.

So you're right. You didn't care. As usual, you didn't care to try and make a cogent counterargument. Instead you ignored what you couldn't refute, puffed up your chest and spewed macho cliche after pro-gun macho cliche.

You're nothing but a troll.

Not reading through 11 pages, but when I read this story earlier, I just couldn't believe it. I really feel for all the passengers on the bus who witnessed any of it. Especially the children. Greyhound will hopefully stick to paying for counseling of the passengers, for as long as it takes because it will probably stay will many people for a long time. Hopefully victim services will get involved as well, they were great with my daughter.

So sick.

Don't worry, not much was missed. It was mostly a lot of goobly gook about how this guys life could have been saved if people were packing handguns on the bus. People getting the hell off of the bus ASAP is what prevented any more fatalities, the sole victim was going into the light before anyone knew what the hell was going on. The guy sitting in front of the victim didn't even realize a knife was involved initially.

11 pages of mostly arguing something that isn't even rational?

WTF about the victim? Someone explain why a obvious fucking psycho was out and about in public? Cuz we're too politically correct to warehouse them and too fucking cheap to keep tabs when we don't?
I'm getting a little tired of having to buy bars for my shop windows and stepping around people jabbering at the moon and pissing themselves walking down the street...

Sorry to disagree but if there's one thing I honestly believe that's if every decent law-abiding citizen that passed all psychological evaluations were able to carry concealed pistols on them this would've never happened, in addition to bringing the crime rate down in droves.
