Better to be judged by twelve than carried by six...

A nice slogan, but you will have neither if the criminal gets away.

If a person has been apprehended, then yes, I agree with you 100%. Again, better for them to have to do the hard time than to get an easy out. But if the choice is between letting a criminal get away or putting a stop to him/her by any means possible, the latter is preferable. One less scumbag in the world to victimize people.

That's why you don't leave living, breathing, heart-beating suspects at the scene of the crime.

Ok on CNN friday night they had this story and had the Texas state sen. who started the "Castle bill". Long and short of it is Mr. Horn is not covered by the law do to a change made in it earlier this year. The term Occupied was added, meaning an occupied home, car, ect....

Now there are other area's of the law that could keep him from going to trial most of them dealing with being in fear of bodily harm and things of that nature.

But if someone is breaking into my neighbors home, I will call the police.

That's the difference between you and me then.

No, I would call the police. But I'd also stop the guy because the police won't get there in time.

This guy should go to jail for first degree murder. He was itching to kill someone and he intervened in something that didn't affect him directly. I'm all for protecting yourself, but like the dispatcher said, no ones property is worth killing over. Stupid old man.

By this measure then the police should not interfere with burglars or rapists or etc. unless it affects them directly.

Has some stupid kid with grade school logic taken over Bart's account?

Are you joking? I fully expect Bart to say something as stupid and illogical as this. A person like Bart has no trouble at all justifying shooting brown people for any reason or no reason.

Justified resurrection of a thread. I like it!
Quoting and responding to comments ~6 months old, not so much.

I think we all agree on a personal right to protect one's own life and property. Does this extend to another's life? Another's property? I am curious, any thoughts/reasoning behind said thoughts?

What about incapcitating/shooting some in the leg? Could we justify that to protect another's property?

Also, for anyone's interest, my personal stand on this is somewhat ambivalent. I cannot judge how exactly the situation went down, and am not sure what I would have done in that situation.

One more thing. What is the difference between a burglar and a robber?

You could, except that's movie/TV bollocks.

The guy's heart was in the right place, but the easiest thing to have done was to fired a round or two over their heads and tell them to kiss the dirt until the cops arrived (and from what i saw on CNN yesterday, they just arriving on the scene when he shot the two).

And the difference between a robber and a burglar is that a burglars breaks into your house when your not home and a robber is the kind of person who mugs you for your wallet. Thus, the difference is where you are when your possessions are stolen.

I looked into the situation a bit more and was informed that an undercover cop was nearby who was a witness and testified at the grand jury hearings. Apparently Mr. Horn ordered the individuals to stop moving or he would fire.

He shot them in the back. Most cops will tell you that if you're going to shoot someone, make sure they're facing you and their hands aren't in the air.

Then they keep running, and you give chase or shoot. Shooting being far easier, and far less dangerous.

They're running away from you, so where's the threat?

They stole "stuff", Tricks. Stuff is replaceable.

So let them get away? Fuck that.

Ever hear of Grant De Patie?

That's where we come back to it being safer to shoot than give chase. Thanks Lily! It's the best of both worlds!

When this guy killed these two people he became their judge and jury. That's not right. You should only use enough force to prevent yourself or someone from being harmed. He wasn't being harmed.
