The officer probably had a Glock which is an automatic. If the trigger is pulled and held, it continues to fire. A person when under stress, like fearing for their life is filled with adrenaline. It would be quite within the realm of possibilities to fire off six shots and not even be aware of firing that often.

"a distance" simply means the cop wasn't close enough for the GSR to transfer to Brown. That goes against the official narrative that the cop was engaged in close quarters combat with Brown and was in immediate fear for his life.
