I guess the Goldstone Fact Finding Mission didn't give the UN the answers it wanted to hear back in 09 so they've commissioned another completely unbiased group to get the "real" facts about Israel's war crimes and to top it off it's being headed by Canadian William Schabas who has called for Israel's leadership to be indicted for war crimes. Canadian leading Gaza war-crimes probe rejects anti-Israel charges http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/nat ... e19996056/Apparently it isn't just Baird who's not happy about this UN appointment to their fact finding mission. $1: Hillel Neuer, head of the Geneva-based advocacy group UN Watch, also called on Schabas to recuse himself from the commission because of his past criticisms of Netanyahu.
“Under international law, William Schabas is obliged to recuse himself because his repeated calls to indict Israeli leaders obviously gives rise to actual bias or the appearance thereof,” Neuer said in a statement.
“You can’t spend several years calling for the prosecution of someone, and then suddenly act as his judge. It’s absurd – and a violation of the minimal rules of due process applicable to UN fact-finding missions.” The more things change the more they stay the same and this latest blatant attempt to affect the outcome of a conflict in favour of one side just goes to show that the UN is just about as useful as the Canadian Senate. So I guess the UN will finally get the results it wanted in 09 and if anyone cares to disagree I'll make a wager that when this group of paid UN hacks release their report in 2015 Israel will come off as a non antagonized aggressor while Hamas will be portrayed as the victim of Israel's unwarranted aggression.

And nobody will care what the verdict is anyway. That is to say, it will change the mind of absolutely no one. It's a waste of time.

martin14 martin14: desertdude desertdude: he Warsaw Ghetto was composed of Jews and now I'm going to post some false equivalency bullshit. http://www.nizkor.org/features/denial-o ... manac.htmlhttp://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jso ... ewpop.htmlhttp://www.simpletoremember.com/vitals/ ... lation.htmThere were around 17 million Jews worldwide in 1939. 11 million in 1945. That's a loss rate of about 1/3. There are about 1.5 billion Muslims in the world. So, when the dirty Joo$ manage to kill about 500 million muslims, then you have something to compare. Until then, you are just full of bullshit as usual. So the number of dead do matter? Since the killing of Hamas vs Israel is so uneven, your position has changed then, and when Israel loses 8000 lives to rocket attacks then it has something to complain about, but not before?

You're probably right but, it doesn't change the fact that the UN besides being ineffective, corrupt, despotic and partisan still shouldn't be hiring clearly biased people and then, expect the world to maintain any modicum of respect for their institution. ![laughing at [laughat]](./images/smilies/smilie_auslachen.gif)

You guys are incorrect. Parts of the UN need to be pruned, but other parts do fantastic work. WHO on the African Ebola crisis for example. You're talking about a few green leaves on a mostly dead tree. No, there are many branches of the UN still vibrant and bearing fine fruit. But "status quo" never makes the headlines. All we hear about are the dictators on the Human Rights Councils, or the 3rd World lock on the General Assembly - but we don't hear about the good work UNESCO is doing in getting gender equality in Eastern Europe, Africa and South Asia for women. We don't hear about all the elections in former dictatorships that have been supervised and certified by the United Nations Development Programme. We don't hear about the UNDP's work in reducing pollution in developing nations, or their work in reducing child labour and increasing jobs in the South Asian Fashion industry. Or the UNDP's work in reducing drug trafficking! We don't hear about the millions being helped by the World Food Program, or how the International Fund for Agricultural Development helps those people feed themselves going forward. There are many things the UN does right that are worth saving, despite the bits that are dysfunctional by design.

Thanks for that reminder, Caleb. And the dysfunctional bits don't seem to do any actual harm, since they are impotent. But it's great fun to watch both sides of the Israel/Palestine conflict quote the UN when it rules their way, deride it when it doesn't.

Why The UN Sucks, Reason #1: The Rwandan Genocide. "April 7 – July 15, 1994 Deaths: 500,000–1,000,000"

BRAH BRAH: Why The UN Sucks, Reason #1: The Rwandan Genocide. "April 7 – July 15, 1994 Deaths: 500,000–1,000,000" Reason Germany sucks #1 - The Holocaust. How about something in the last 20 years? But then, it's tough to talk about all the conflicts that haven't happened because of the UN's interventions.

The UN caused the Rwandan genocide? Those were UN troops dressed as locals? The argument seems to be that because the UN can't stop every war or massacre it sucks. Would we really have less wars or massacres with no UN?
Brah doesn't like the UN because of Israel. Yet Israel and its supporters are quick to refer to the UN when a ruling goes their way.

andyt andyt: Yet Israel and its supporters are quick to refer to the UN when a ruling goes their way. To be fair, the only Resolution Israel ever put forward in the General Assembly was an affirmation on treating all children everywhere with respect; and the General Assembly amended it and turned it around so that it became a condemnation of Israeli treatment of Palestinian children. I think their point was well demonstrated.
