Is Dubai a free democracy? Never said it was.
Can any body say what they want? That was never part of the question and NO well kinda depending on who is saying. Basically you can say anything with the exeception of critizing the govt or reiligon. Other than that everything else is basically fair game.
Gay Pride parade in Dubai? No and personally I thank god I'm spared the freak show.
Queers are fine in Dubai? Only if they keep a low profile, like I said there are no active witch hunts.
Do women say from Pakistan enjoy the same rights as a guy from Dubai? Yes only in rural tribal areas, specially the North where you'll find the kind of thing your thinking of. Go to any decent size city in the country and see for yourself.
And do the Dubai cops lock gay bashers up? If you mean if anyone who has commited any physical violence. Yes, Let me be clear homosexuality is outlawed in this country and also a cultural taboo and if caught in the act or convicted of it. its usually carries terms like 3 months in the slammer, some fine or both and if an expat usually followed by deportation.

Gay bashers are people who attack people just for being gay.

ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog: Too bad they weren't as tough on pedophiles. Pedophilia is an interesting one. It's a johnny-come-lately as far as social mores go, and yet it seems to have very quickly reached the top ten on the outrage list. I think that's a good thing, mind you.

Funny how you can accuse someone of homosexual acts as an insult, yet call someone a homophobe for not agreeing with homosexuality.

Judging by the ongoing antics of the Vatican and certain elements in Middle Eastern society, one could almost assume that the raping of children also causes far more outrage among the non-religious than it does among the religious (or at least among the non-fundamentalists). Just thought I'd get that blanketing and thoroughly fun cheap shot in against the Bible-thumpers while I had the opportunity.

Just thought I'd get that blanketing and thoroughly fun cheap shot in against the Bible-thumpers while I had the opportunity. Yes I gather it's always been kind of taboo, but only lately--the last fifty years or so--that's it really started hitting 10 on the outrage-o-meter. The definition of pedophilia has kind of inflated to include sex with teens under 16 or so (which, to be pathologically correct, doesn't count as pedophilia). Secular liberals lead the way again!

Brock:
Just something that Hitchens kept emphasizing in 'god Is Not Great'. All the major religions have a lot of extremely creepy tracts and traditions that practically encourage the abuse of children. And that, even in modern times, religious groups have been very successful at intimidating or bribing secular authorities into looking the other way while this sort of evil is perpetrated. Good examples in North America alone would be Mormon bigamy with underaged 'wives', the Christian Brothers atrocities in the Maritimes, and some of the shit that administrators and priests got up to in the Native residential schools. Given the overwhelming control of almost all aspects of life that religion has among Muslims, and going by old legends of harems of young boys, etc, I thoroughly expect that our Islamic friends also share the same centuries-long tradition of rank pedophilia and pederasty that the Christian world clearly does.
I only wish that I could be joking about this, but it's all unfortunately true. Put adult males who have been taught to supress or demonize their natural mating urges for adult women in charge of helpless unsupervised children and a sexual atrocity invariably occurs. Make it a cornerstone of the religion itself and it becomes an atrocity that spans centuries and can never ever be healed.

I wish Albertans did have an accent. It might actually make us less boring.

You guys are missing out! Within a 5 mile radius of where I'm from the accent changes noticeably.
I spent time in NFLD and it's pretty much like Eire and the UK for accents. I can easily pick out that 'Ottawa Valley' twang and people in BC sound very similar to people from Washington state. Besides the Atlantic provinces most English -speaking Canadians, sound very similar.
