You're missing the forest for the trees. You know that there are other industries that rely on Dairy for a large portion of their business, also most dairy farmers also grow cash crops and food crops to supplement their income, the dairy farms go, so too will other industries.

Not at all. The point you're trying to make is without facts and based on emotion.

You continue to go on about this and gloss over facts for the sake of false hysteria about Town's shrinking, selling our food sovereignty, etc.

Our dairy industry has shrunk by 93% over the last 50 years. Our agriculture sector and those that support it, have adapted and grown. Farms have evolved to serve the current market demands and are thriving!

Allowing 3.5% of our total dairy market to be open to US imports isn't selling our food sovereignty. It's a tiny portion of our agri-food sector and dairy farmers will be just fine...or they'll adapt as they've already done.

And Rural Canada is withering. Your focusing only on dairy, dude there is more to this then ONE industry, it’s like when they killed all the wolves in Yellowstone, the ecosystem nearly collapsed. It was only saved when they reintroduced wolves in the 90’s.everything supports everything, so you start fucking with dairy you don’t understand you now are now fucking with everyone from the feed lot operator to the convenience store owners to the tractor and combine dealers to the bar keeps in the little bars that are in these villages. You talk about dairy farms shrinking over the last years, that’s mainly from many farmers being forced to sell their farms, because we’re killing the industry. But you don’t give a shit and that’s fine. But the biggest reason you should not like this because of national security, think... are you fine with a foreign power controlling our food supply? Piss that foreign power off and they can cut the food supply and starve us until they get what they want. Before you fire off and say it’s only 3.75%, your right, for now, but there is nothing stopping that foreign power from demanding more. This is how appeasement works, once we start it’s neigh impossible to stop.

And let me just say it’s clear we’re not going to see eye to eye on this so let’s just agree to disagree.

Says who?

Anecdotally, I spent my spring & summer in Northern Ontario and spent my summer this year in rural Newfoundland. I didn't see any 'withering'.

I do understand! Let me try to explain.

You keep repeating that the dairy industry is far more than just the farmers to which I completely agree.

It's the guys that sell and maintain the equipment, the guy who sells the animals, the local stores and all of these people that help maintain these communities and farms are effected by local farmers.

Despite the decimation of our dairy industry, these communities are still standing. The people, the farmers and the businesses have adapted to the new way of life and the changes in the industry.

Totally false.

Canada has gone to extreme lengths to protect the dairy industry. The market/customer has dictated the decline of the dairy industry. We're not 'killing' anything. We're opting to purchase different products to consume.

Last year, the US sent 670+ million worth of dairy into Canada.

On top of us allowing more American access to our dairy market, they opened the doors to allow for more of our dairy, peanuts and sugar to move South of the border.

70% of what we eat in Canada is imported foods. We're already at the mercy of foreign powers when it comes to our food supply.

Apologies for being a bit late to the party, but here are my thoughts:

-Boots, Robair and Peck420 pretty much nailed it in terms of supply management. When the U.S. dairy industry is forced to waste gallons of milk by dumping it in farm fields and even some U.S. dairy farmers are wondering whether they should adopt a supply management system, and my local paper quoted local dairy farmers panning the agreement, showing this feeling isn't just limited to Quebec, supply management actually starts to look pretty decent as an alternative if it avoid supply gluts, keeps more small local operators in business, supports other agricultural industries and helps maintain rural communities.

-The big highlight for me is getting rid of that f*cking ISDS Chapter 11 shit. This is one thing I fully commend the Trump administration for pushing to get rid of, even though the Americans have never been successfully sued by it even though it's repeatedly bent us over and giving us one good stiff reaming after another.

-Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we did anything about restricting foreign ownership and the hollowing out of our economy. This is something that everybody from Mel Hurtig to Warren Buffett has warned about...but then again, maybe I shouldn't be surprised at this.

-Ditto with the energy proportionality clause. As an Albertan, I still can't comprehend how we could surrender so much control over our energy industry to the U.S., especially after Peter Lougheed, Mr. Alberta himself, was criticizing its impacts.

-N Fiddledog's CBC link is very revealing...and disappointing. Longer prescription drug patents, lack of access to professional visas, and now the U.S. getting to dictate which other countries we can make trade agreements with?!? Thanos hit it out of the park with our being a borderline Sudetenland with this-and it's along the lines of what Eric Kierans and Walter Stewart were talking about 30 years ago.

No.

Fuck.

No.

I think I'll go into the next room and have a nervous breakdown now.
