andyt andyt: But you said the tax on gas should pay for roads. I agree. Since most gas taxes are paid in Metro Vancouver, we should get most of that tax money for our roads, no? Why? BC is one Province. Vancouver benefits from the whole Province. The rest of the province does not benefit from Vancouver tho. $1: As for the roof on BC place (Not Rogers arena), you can have it. Pick it up any time you want - what a bullshit deal. But even there, it's not just a benefit for Lower Mainlanders. I'm sure you have Lions fans out in hicksville too - they wouldn't be able to watch them on TV if the Lions had nowhere to play. Same with if you have any Whitecaps fans. And if it really had been the Rogers arena - can you imagine the outrage in Dogpatch if the Canucks couldn't play? Oh, my bad. I'm sure we do have Lions fans and Whitecaps fans. Why wouldn't they be able to watch? That's what CTV and CBC do for a living right? $1: And as i said, the sea to sky highway should be tolled, and a tax put on Whistler and Squamish businesses to help pay for it. Yup. And if you want to promote more ski areas in BC (really, there are plenty more than just Whistler), a good way to get there would be a nice start.

Not good enough - show me some economic data that the hinterland supports the city. Usually these days it's the other way around - tax revenue from the city has to go to the hinterland because there's such a lack of economic activity there. The clubs. That's why you pay for your tickets to watch it. The TV networks who buy the rights to broadcast your game.

Unsound Unsound: OnTheIce OnTheIce: Nobody needs anything beyond the basics. Enough room for you and your family.
People don't "need" a Mustang, Porsche or any sports car anymore than they need a truck....but at least the truck is more practical. And if you can afford to buy a mustang or a porshe or a $40 000 truck, then you can pay a little extra to run it. Or maybe you shouldn't have bought it in the first place. Which was exactly my point!

I was hoping you would come up with something, because so far I haven't been able to - using the wrong search terms I guess. But, with the unemployment endemic in the hinterland, it stands to reason that the city is subsidising the hicks. And to claim that the trees and minerals belong to you - just a minute ago you said BC was one province. They belong to all of us. Well, the natives really. The hicks wouldn't be able to hew that wood without the money that the city provides to do it, nor without the job the city does to sell it. Without Vancouver you wouldn't have much of a province, bunch of people living in mud huts. Without the hinterland Vancouver would never have been born.

You came up with "we pay more, we deserve more". I think that on an average per capita, that's bullshit. So, based on a per capita average, you don't deserve more. I don't understand why Vancouver can get a multi million dollars boost while the sticks can't even get a 100k boost. Seriously, have you ever seen potholes on the highway being filled by 2 men in rubber boots with a bucket of warm asphalt, pouring it in the potholes, stamping on it with their feet, throw on some more so the cars driving over it will put the necessary pressure on it? THAT is the way it is repaired here. And actually, I am ashamed.

You know Brenda, I wonder about you sometimes. Your logic seems to just disappear, yet usually you seem like an intelligent woman. I was arguing exactly that - distribute govt revenue based in per capita and on how much is collected per capita. Vancouver has by far the most capita, so it's going to get the most money, as it does. Because of efficiencies of scale, we can do more with that money, per capita, than you all in the sticks. Our roads are full, so cost of the road per capita is less than yours, so we can build more roads. ETC.

Brenda Brenda: I don't understand why Vancouver can get a multi million dollars boost while the sticks can't even get a 100k boost. Lower Mainland population = 2.6 million. Population of BC = 4 million. That means that less than half of govt money should be flowing to the rest of BC. Devide multi millin dollars by the rest of BC, and your little area might only qualify for 100k. We have some atrocious roads, at the same time as they're building some nice new ones. That's how it goes. You don't get the nice new ones, because you don't have people flocking to your region that would require it. I wish you did. I wish you could convince all those immigrants and temp workers we get every year to move to your place. I'd gladly put up with poor roads if it meant taking a breather for a bit here.

Btw - rural ridings have far fewer people in them than urban ones - so a rural vote is worth more than an urban one. If districts were drawn on a per capita basis, the hinterland would lose representation, and the cities gain it.

They drive our roads too - and we have more roads, but way more traffic on them. How's your rush hour? Ours lasts all day.
