That's an understatement. Leaving this creature to suffer in solitude for 67 years should warrant someone a lengthy prison sentence for animal cruelty..

I don't mean to take away from how horrible it is to keep these animals in captivity, but holy crap, 69 ? That is older than most wild elephants live. Maybe no nagging wife or annoying kids is the answer.

It's easy to beat up on zoos but the sad reality is that in a few more decades they'll be the only places to find some of these animals because they'll have been completely exterminated in the wild. I hope somewhere that the more enlightened zoos or far-seeing benefactors are doing something like keeping the DNA of some of these animals stored somewhere so that maybe if a wiser kind of human comes along in the far future they can be cloned and resurrected. It's the least that we'll owe them.
