Sorry...he may have had some valid points, but I felt like punching him after about 1 minute. And yes, the Paddy's and their Papist laws are pretty backwards.

^ This!

This is the kind of shit you might expect in backward third world countries, not supposedly first world ones.

Ireland is in the running for the most backwards country in Europe, socially speaking. Divorce wasn't legal until 1997 and homosexuality was outlawed until 1993. Blasphemy is still against against the law, as are abortions, de facto anyway.

There is a reason why the Abortion Boat goes there.

The main issue in this case is that even under the law in the Republic of Ireland she should have been allowed an abortion as her life was in danger. Even up here in Northern Ireland the government seem hell bent to stay anti abortion. The law is fairly similar here as it is in the Republic which ironically is one thing the Catholics and Protestants agree on. Thousands of women travel to England every year to have abortions where it is completely decriminalised.

Even though I am religious I have an open mind and I am very pro choice. This whole island seems to be stuck in a religious past. There are far too many hard line Christians who make the laws in this country. Recently the first private abortion clinic opened in Belfast. They still have to operate under the law in Northern Ireland but the Pro Life nutters are already protesting outside it.
