Sad. I guess it's another case of dilution of responsiblity. But somebody apparently saw her and that she was in trouble, but didn't call. No excuse for that. I wonder how many in the neighborhood were Chinese/Asian. I know that's racist, but they don't seem to be as willing to be involved with a situation. "Not my business."

$1:
Well then that's pretty clear and depressing negligence,
and a mark of society.

Here ya go, Mr. C, last nights comment about dead bodies
actually belongs in this thread.

Fuckin disgustin.

It is sad... But to blame it on the neighbours is a bit much.
If you want to put the blame anywhere, it should be on the husband, who gave her a chance to get out of the house, instead of making sure she was locked inside.

So someone heard a scream at 2 am-ish. Would you immediately call the cops? I wouldn't. I wouldn't even think something happened, I would blame it on either myself, waking up screaming from a dream, or a cat outside...

Yep, and if there's teenage girls in the neighborhood, they scream like they're being raped or murdered while they're just goofing with their friends. But one person actually saw this woman and that she was in trouble and did nothing. And even with a scream I'll at least look outside, and if it's repeated go and investigate.

As for blaming the husband, alzheimers people wander. Very tough for him to always keep her in sight, and now old and frail is he? I don't think he can be blamed at all, looking after an alzheimers person is incredibly difficult.

I've seen both extremes here. People whizzing by mere inches from someone who has collapsed in the street(liability - cultural and legal plays a role in this callous behaviour) or had an accident, and other times seen people who will rush into traffic to help. sometimes increasing the casualties. I usually pull my scooter up to an accident and place it in such a fashion that it completely blocks other traffic(it's a 250 cc which is a big scooter by their standards) from coming close to the victim. I've shoved others off of their scooters who get too pushy, as I've personally suffered the consequences of those guilty of DWA.

Absolutely. That's why I don't think you can blame anyone at all. It is a tragic incident and I think opinions of a journalist or a police officer do not belong in stories like this.

WE had a case here of a young woman being murdered who was screaming loudly. Lots of people heard her. But it was at a teeny party spot, so they probably heard loud screams every night. Same hand wringing, but really, what are you going to do. But again, if somebody actually saw this woman, and that she was in trouble, and did nothing, that's despicable. Just go out to her and assess before calling the cops. Bring her inside while waiting - an old woman poses no threat.

+1. Finding out why she's screaming and clawing at your screen door beats finding an old womansicle on your doorstep the next morning and having to live with that.

It's funny but I guess I'm one of the few people who investigates noises outside my house. Call it me being a good neighbour or call me an idiot. I've had to call the police a number of times after investigating noises. One those incidents was a group of 11-13 year olds breaking into my neighbours house. Other times it was a drunk driver passed out at the wheel or a couple of idiot teens smashing the window to a store front.

Same here, for me it was in the middle of the afternoon. I heard male screams.
Looked out one window couldn't see anything went out on my fire escape it was two guys fighting. They exchange blows got helped each other up and went on their way.

I would do alot more if I heard screaming from a women in the middle of winter at 2 in the morning if I couldn't see what was going on I would of gotten dressed and taken a look. And shame on the person that did see something and went back to bed.

I actually witnessed a non-fatal shooting that happened outside my condo a couple years back and called the cops...along with god knows how many others... I testified at a prelim but the kid plead guilty anyway so I didn't have to go to a criminal trial. It was kind of fun! A lot of wasted time though. Had to spend 5 hours in the cop shop and take 2 days off of work just for 5 minutes on the stand.
