Now that I've posted this and have thought about it, the first time I saw a gas station advertising in L's the price was $0.17, that was 10 years before this guy got shut down. I think PET actually saved buddy some money in the long run.

While it's a "charming" story I don't think it's a symbol of defiance to want to desperately hold on to an inferior system of measurement as much as it is a fear of change.
