Eagles are pretty, but given the choice of a rabbit in a field and a rabbit squished on the side of the road; Eagles will take the easy meal.

That's why I like Hawks more.

When we lived on Vancouver island the boat launch near our place had a cleaning station. Once you had cut off the head of your fish you could throw it up into the air for the eagles. They are amazing to watch but they do tend to be lazy if someone else is willing to do the work for them

Friends from LA came to visit once, I took them fishing. One of the boys got a small trout on the line and just as he reeld it in and I reached with the net an eagle swooped down and stole it. We all watched it go up in the air then PLOP the line & lure fell back into the water.
The kid wasn't disappointed just sat with his mouth open muttering "amazing".

OK, I thought an eagle had finally gotten lazy enough to go for some McDo.

When I was living up on the Central Coast there was a pair of eagles whose nest was just behind the house we lived in. When we'd get back from fishing and use the cleaning table on the dock right beside one or both of them would keep an eye on our progress. They knew that once the filleting was done the head/carcass would be theirs. We'd place it at the end of the dock and would barley get a few steps away before they'd swoop down and grab it.

That's one reason Bald Eagles are so prolific, even though they are great hunters, especially fish, they will never turn their beaks up at a free meal, whether it is road kill, garbage dumps and even theft from other eagles, or anything else they think they can get away with.

One of the reasons people don't have cats and purse rats up here, or if they do, they keep them indoors all of the time.

When the Shubenacadie River in Nova Scotia freezes up, the bald eagles arrive... every time the tide goes up, the ice floods over and when the tide goes down, a lot of fish get stranded on the ice... then the buffet opens up.

Same at my place. Between the hawks circling the field next to me looking for gophers, and coyotes that run through at night, someone comes by every couple weeks looking for their lost cat. I always want to point up at the hawk circling and say, "ask him". But they often have kids in tow, so I don't want to be cruel.
