Good to see something being done though shoplifting doesn't carry much of a penalty unless a weapon is involved. To me a thief is a thief regardless of what they are stealing.

It would be good to see this type of operation in other places, like where I am, because shoplifting is fucking annoying. Fortunately, we haven't had anyone produce a weapon on anyone on our staff but I recently had to remind an asshole that he wasn't allowed in since I've caught him twice stealing (made him put stuff back the last time LOL). Just had another one caught recently (made to put the item back) and she returned a few days later wearing a disguise.

It's a shame people have to resort to that just to eat.

You can use this justification for people stealing groceries (and I get it) but people stealing merchandise to sell for money are likely using the money to buy drugs.

Regardless, it is increasingly making retail business of any kind potentially more dangerous for the staff and customers.

Oh yes, quite likely. They do mention that repeat offenders keep offending. I guess someone has to fucking die before the assholes are kept for more than a few hours and even then there will be the sob story of what "circumstances" led them to do such a terrible thing. Boo fucking hoo.

On its own, shoplifting is a minor crime. But when its done en masse and in an organized fashion like this, it can be really hard on smaller chains and businesses. The punishments are minor to non-existent for it, but for repeat offenders there has to be a graduated scale. Maybe not a stupid "three strikes" law, but there has to be a line where it isn't stealing to make ends meet, but as a criminal enterprise.

That amount of money and people arrested sounds like it's more Organized Retail Crime and not just some guy stealing a steak from Safeway.

True, it was definitely organized. But it's still food. They have to resell it to someone. There is a market for cheap food, because food is so expensive.

I think everyone who has to use a food bank is a failure on our society.
