I read that one too. Unfreakinbelivable.

$1:
In August 2007, a B-52 was mistakenly armed with six nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and flown from North Dakota to Louisiana with its crew unaware they had nuclear bombs aboard.

Like an accident? Hmmm.. what? New guy, first day?

$1:
In March 2008, the Pentagon acknowledged a mistaken shipment of four electrical fuses for ballistic missile warheads to Taiwan...

There's that word again..

$1:
... subsequent investigation found that slippage in nuclear standards was a "problem that has been identified but not effectively addressed" for more than a decade.

No shit, Dick Tracey.

You'd think must maybe this might be kind of a priority?

The US has a shoddy record of dealing with and handling nukes from day one. Its not a recent phenomena.

Fixed for you. Both superpowers have been less than diligent in their handling of nuclear arms. Apparently several TONS of nuclear material goes missing every year! 8O

My bad, your correct. But Russia is hardly a super power these days. Has nuke capabilty but hardly a super power.

And its not just nukes, the missing trillion dollars still hasn't been found, explained or has it ?

Good job guys, good job. You would think for something as dangerous as nukes (NUKES for f..ks sake!) there would be backup after backup, apparently not.

50 out of 450 ICBM's were effectively offline. I don't really see a big deal here as we still had 400 land based ICBMs available and some 3500 other nuclear weapons available.

I doubt anyone in the world was thinking, "Hey, the Americans only have 3,900 nukes instead of 3,950! Now's our chance to hit them with their pants down!"

...or this could be the spark for a whole new round of disarmament talks for weapons that are clearly not needed.

These are not weapons, they are antiques.

Scary but not all that alarming. The capacity to destroy humanity was still intact.

Ahhh, they are practically brand new compared to the B-52s still in service, which may stay in operation until the 2040s!

$1:
There is a proposal under consideration to re-engine the remaining B-52H aircraft to extend the service life. B-52 re-engine plans, if implemented, call for the B-52 to be utilized through 2025. Current engineering analysis show the B-52's life span to extend beyond the year 2040. The limiting factor of the B-52’s service life is the economic limit of the aircraft's upper wing surface, calculated to be approximately 32,500 to 37,500 flight hours. Based on the projected economic service.
