While I think he's stupid for having joined in the first place, I applaud him for not taking the cowards route by running.

What, he wasn't a Muslim when he enlisted? Deploy him to prison, since I wouldn't trust him in Astan not to turn against his fellow soldiers.

Maybe we could send him somewhere less objectionable so we can make sure to get our money's worth for training him.

So what would happen if he, lets say, worked for an abortion clinic, and he suddenly decided he was against abortion. Or if he worked for a vet, and he decided he was against euthanasia on pets. Or he worked at the oil rigs and he suddenly became "green". He would be let go, and on welfare.
Why would this be any different?
If you are against war, WHY would you join the army???

I think he should have considered his religion prior to sighning up, stupid decision, plus having a muslim parent perhaps there should have been some proactive conversation.

Good point. I'm sure there are plenty of duty stations that the US Army could send him to if his application for CO status is denied.

If you read the guy's logic in the article, he joined up thinking that defending freedom and such in Afghanistan et al. was worthwhile, but has since come to think the war was unjustified. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, it should be easy to find him somewhere else to work. I'm not sure what he would have gained by jumping in for a year and then using an excuse to jump right back out.

Pseudonym Pseudonym: If you read the guy's logic in the article, he joined up thinking that defending freedom and such in Afghanistan et al. was worthwhile, but has since come to think the war was unjustified. Then you must support all the other deserters who came to the same conclusion even if they weren't Muslim. Some of them actually served in Iraq but didn't want to go back.

This guy is trying to go through proper military channels. That's a far sight from deserters who abandon their duty mid-mission. My recommendation is to put him somewhere where he can still do good while minimizing potential conflicts of interest. Regardless, he should comply with the military's decision in this matter.

Why should this guy get sent to some cushy assignment like Hawaii, while other brave kids are coming home in bodybags or crippled for life? Screw him!I have a friend that has been deployed to that shithole four times now.I would approve his CO status. You don't want to kill people? Fine, retrain his ass into the bomb squad or medic. Then ship his ass to Afganistan. He won't have to kill anyone, but let him spend some time living in foxholes dodging incoming rounds just like everyone else.

He him start in the Arctic holding a Canadian flag to support their sovereignty. That is about all he is good for.
