Don't know why these companies keep trying to go through their land when this is the sort of thing that always happens. Just tack on the extra miles to go around the reserves and eat the fucking extra cost to get the job done. They'll more than make their money back in the forty to fifty years the damn lines will be in service.

Doesn't help when they've claimed 110% of the province as aboriginal land, does it?

I don't think this is about reserve land, but "traditional territory." As Herbie pointed out, FNs claim more than 100 percent of BC land, so going around would mean just going around BC.

The courts have said the govt must engage in meaningful consultation with FNs about use of their traditional territory, whatever the fark that means. But the govt legally can declare that the use is necessary and thus override any FN veto. Thing is, is there a govt out there that has the cajones to do that, deal with the inevitable protests.

Harper did the oil companies no favor by trying to ram things thru, just wound up causing even more problems for the projects. Including the Keystone one.

You know, it's kind of funny. About 4 years ago, I was shown a proposal by a certain Edmonton startup, looking for investment. He told me that his proposal would be the future, and I didn't believe him.

Here we are, 4 years later, and his proposal is looking to become more and more certain. With every pipeline project being blocked, his proposal could very well become the only way.

Damn...I guess you can't get in on all of the good ideas.

BC First Nations claim 100%+ of the land because pretty much 100% of the land was used by them prior to contact with Europeans. The extra 10% or whatever it is is disputed territory. The land was never ceded.

Yep. BC FNs claiming 100+ % of the land as traditional territory would pretty well imply that.

Meanwhile, everyone drove their ICE powered vehicles to the protest.
