They missed this bit that was in the CTV story:
"Brig.-Gen. Jonathan Vance said the soldiers were killed Saturday when their re-supply convoy was hit by two improvised explosive devices in the Zhari district, west of Kandahar City.

The two soldiers had left their vehicle to secure the area after an initial explosion, when a second IED detonated around 3:20 p.m. local time."

They died because of one reason, not following SOPs.

When was the last time you were over or getting ready to go over to know what the current SOPs are? And if you do know what the current SOPs are, why would you even hint at them on a public forum?

Nice. Done with the grandstanding on the soldier-death-thread?

I've been told to avoid bringing them up period. Unless you know something I don't about this specific situation it sounds tome like they followed SOPs as I know them.

And you could atleast pretend to care about losing two more boys overseas. They may not have been your friends, but they could have been your friends buddies, and they the ones that were left picking up the bloody pieces. Regardless they are fallen comrades, and deserve your respect regardless of whether they fucked up or not.

Rest In Piece lads.

Im not saying it isnt sad, but Im not the bleeding heart type. From what I have read, and from what I know you’re supposed to do they didnt follow the plan that is set out for all teams. I am assuming quite a bit, but its not that far of a stretch. All it takes is saying "its hot, I have seen this so many times before, lets just get this over with quickly".

It sucks, but Im not going to give crocodile tears, its sad it is, but so is the construction worker who falls off scaffolding. I am lucky and only personally know one person who has died. I am sorry he is dead, but it was unavoidable.

Im sorry your son lost his friends raydan, but if Im right I think he will be one of the first people to tell you that they screwed up.

Maybe.
My son told me the only thing he had control over was doing his job to the best of his abilities and by following the rules and orders given him.
The rest will take care of itself.

I don't know if these guys did that or not but I don't care.
One way or another, it doesn't change the fact that they're gone.

They were combat engineers Fawkes, IED's are their biz, that's how they roll, not sure if you were the guy passing out timbits on the board walk in a hairnet, but things are slightly different outside the wire. I'd love to see your SOP's. Can't neg rep you though I'd like to.

I know enough EOD types that this is exactly NOT what they have going through their heads when they go on the job. And it spits in the face of those doing the most important and most dangerous job over there to keep the rest of us alive.

These guys werent EOD, they were engineers, but not EOD.

**Edit: EOD should have been called, and if by some fluke these guys were the EOD det the on scene commander should be charged with murder.

Again, I don't understand where you are coming from with this. You are basing the situation off of 2 year old SOPs. Shit's changed over there. There isn't enough detail in the article to state concretely whether they were following SOPs or not (as it should be); but based on current SOPs, the details that were provided in the article suggest they probably were followed.

It's not like the secondary IED was sticking up out of the ground with a big red flag marker attached and the unit commander told his troops to run in the direction of the thing. The ragheads are smarter then that.

My bad specifically calling them EOD, however it's the only thing I've ever seen the engineers doing during the latest rounds of workup training.
