I have always thought Russia would make a amazing partner in NATO if they would just play ball and be more cooperative. More or less in the military sense. Not for Afghanistan of course, there military involvement would only promote more violence due to there history there. However any other conflicts I always thought if the US, Russia and NATO worked together. God help whoever they face.

Russia can't be part of weapon that was made against them. The news in media that they "work" is the bullshit.

They won't return because there is nothing for them, Medvedev and Putin are realising that there are a lot of problems inside the country yet.

Russia is a mess. Russia's military is falling apart. What is Russia going to contribute to Afghanistan? They can't even deal with their own Caucus provinces.

Russia failed in Afghanistan, so why would they even think of entering again when its not working for us? Putin and Medvedev should give Fidel a call.. he has some news for them .

Repeating history, especially the bad parts, seems to be the true human experience.

When I was face-to-face with the Soviet military in Ethiopia, they were dressed in tatty uniforms and driving ancient 4WD 'jeepskis'.

Their aircraft were the primitive An-12's and Mil-6's. What pieces of crap they were compared to a C130 or a Sea King.

My fear of thousands of T72's rolling into Western Europe were allayed.
And this was at the supposed ‘height’ of the USSR’s power.

Agreed about supposed Soviet might.

But not so much about Russia's aggression towards Western Europe. Historically West Europeans have threatened Russia far more than Russia has threatened them.

Russia always seems to be interested in the East, rather than the west. In the meantime, it has been invaded twice from the West in the last 200 years.

$1:
Sergei Lavrov said his government wanted to offer Washington and Nato all the help it can to stabilise the war-wrecked country, short of sending troops.

Guys, read. That was the second sentence of the article. Here is the part you should have cared about.

$1:
Among the proposals Moscow has in mind, he said, is for Russian engineers to renovate some 140 infrastructure projects, including power stations, built during the Soviet occupation, assistance in repairing the key Salang tunnel, and provision of helicopters.

And?

Hard for the Russians to screw things up when all they would send would be civilians.

Any Russian civilians are going to need protection. The Afghans have banned private security firms from many parts of the country.

That means the Russians will need soldiers to protect them.

Where do you think they will come from? Many of the Taliban are Chechens. Connect the dots.

Actualy its been 3 to 5 times depending on whom you speak with. France , then WWI (Germany with Austria Hungry), then poland (depending on whom you talk to) just after WWI poland grabed some areas that the USSR claimed, Finland though USSR started it at the start of WWII when USSR and Germany were getting along, then WWII (Germany,Finland, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungry thae last three sent token forces). The Poland and Finnish wars are debateable in regards of being invaded. That covers from the early 1800's to now. Before then there are a lot more western invasion of the area we call Russia/USSR and also some movement/attack from what is now Russia into the west but thats way back so to speak.
