http://www.dw.com/en/turkeys-post-coup- ... a-19408795$1: Turkey's post-coup sees thousands of arrests, suspensions
The government has arrested and suspended a massive number of people in connection with last weekend's botched coup. The army, police, judiciary and civil servants are among those continuing to be targeted.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's retribution picked up pace on Monday as the number of people arrested with alleged links to the plot reached 7,543. They included more than 6,000 soldiers, 100 police officers, 755 judges and prosecutors and 650 civilians.
Earlier Monday, a senior security official told the Reuters news agency that 8,000 police officers, including those based in the capital Ankara and the biggest city Istanbul, had been removed from their posts on suspicion of links to last weekend's abortive government takeover.
About 1,500 finance ministry officials were suspended, a ministry official said, and CNN Turk said 30 governors and more than 50 high-ranking civil servants were also dismissed. Annual leave was postponed for more than 3 million civil service staff, while close to 3,000 judges and prosecutors have been suspended. Other reports suggested a massive purge of staff at the Interior Ministry.
Senior officials interrogated
A total of 103 generals and admirals have been detained for questioning, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.
Among those accused was former air force chief General Akin Ozturk, who appeared before a criminal court in Ankara Monday. Ozturk denied being a mastermind of the plot. Anadolu cited him as saying: "I am not the person who planned or led the coup. Who planned it and directed it I do not know."
The commander was later shown on state media in custody, badly battered and bloody, his ear bandaged.
Air base searched
The Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey was also raided Monday, and seven soldiers were detained, Anadolu reported.
A dozen other suspects were previously held, accused of backing the failed coup, officials said at the weekend.
The facility is used by the US-led coalition to launch air strikes on the so-called "Islamic State" (IS) group in Iraq and Syria. It also houses a major stockpile of nuclear weapons.
The accelerated purge came as several world leaders warned Erdogan against using the opportunity to consolidate his power and continue to stifle dissent, a strategy that has already caused tensions with Europe. EU foreign ministers urged restraint in the wake of the failed coup.
"All must be done to avoid further violence, to protect lives and to restore calm," they said in a joint statement, following a meeting Monday in Brussels.
NATO's Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg joined the call for Turkey's leaders to respect the rule of law when dealing with those responsible for the thwarted plot.
But Turkey's foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, hit back at criticism of the treatment of suspected coup plotters, saying it amounted to support for the failed coup.
Analysts warned Monday that the purge could have far-reaching consequences for the operations of key state institutions. It could also raise security risks following several terror attacks in Ankara and Istanbul in recent months, and as a military campaign against Kurdish rebels intensifies.
Various sources say that now at least 16,000 people have been arrested and over 21,000 teachers have been fired (almost all women). There was also a large apartment building fire in Ankara this morning that burned to the ground in the absence of firefighters. Speculation is that the firefighters have been fired or else the building was put to the torch in order to dispose of executed opponents of the regime.

Good bye to a Turkey that at least played lip service to secular society. Any liberal or secular opposition has been effectively neutered.

Suspensions? As in, your head is being suspended from your body.

I'm not the only person starting to wonder if the Turkish coup was at least to some degree a false-flag operation that was meant to expose Erdogan's opposition.
The suspicion for this is rooted in several observations:
1. About 30,000 people so far have been arrested or fired from their jobs. The lists of those people were clearly compiled before this 'coup' occured.
2. The military of Turkey has never failed to oust an extremist government before and in this coup attempt it was clear that at least a third of the military sat it out.
3. The 'organizer' of the coup (Gulen) is a moderate cleric living in the USA who has long opposed extremism...if he opposed Erdogan in favor of the secular military then it's not Gulen who's the extremist.
4. Erdogan personally approved of using the Hagia Sophia as a mosque again...a symbolic decision that returned Constantinople to Islamic rule and he's being celebrated as the new Caliph in Sunni circles. He's also made statements that encourage the invasions of Spain and Italy by Muslims.
I think the real coup wasn't done by the military but by Erdogan and I am firmly convinced that we're about to see Turkey become something along the lines of Iran: a theocratic state.

Erdogan's hit list is now estimated to number in excess of 50,000. http://in.reuters.com/article/turkey-se ... NKCN0ZZ12Z$1: Turkey vowed to root out allies of the U.S.-based cleric it blames for an abortive coup last week, widening a purge of the army, police and judiciary on Tuesday to universities and schools, the intelligence agency and religious authorities.
Around 50,000 soldiers, police, judges, civil servants and teachers have been suspended or detained since the coup attempt, stirring tensions across the country of 80 million which borders Syria's chaos and is a Western ally against Islamic State.
"This parallel terrorist organisation will no longer be an effective pawn for any country," Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said, referring to what the government has long alleged is a state within a state controlled by followers of Fethullah Gulen.
"We will dig them up by their roots," he told parliament. The bloodbath will start shortly...if it hasn't already.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36843180$1: Turkey has formally charged 99 generals and admirals in connection with the weekend's thwarted coup attempt - a significant chunk of the country's military top brass.
President Erdogan is meeting with loyal commanders and his cabinet in Ankara.
Authorities have banned all academics from travelling abroad, as the purge of state employees suspected of being connected to the failed coup continues.
More than 50,000 people have been rounded up, sacked or suspended.
So far about 1,577 university deans (faculty heads) have been asked to resign in addition to 21,000 teachers and 15,000 education ministry officials.
They are suspected of having links to the alleged mastermind of the coup, US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen - who denies any involvement. Getting to Stalin levels soon.
