I appreciate the driver might have no clue what's going on at the time but shifting into neuteral or shutting the car off should be the automatic, trained responces.

I have to move the floor matt back all the time in my Mustang. It once held onto my excerator and I just continued to speed up as I came fairly close to a corner. But as ridenrain said I had the peice of mind to throw it into neuteral stop and reach down to get it un stuck.

Hell of a lot better than phoning the cops. Like that's going to help? One of the guys in the car was a highway patrol officer too. Don't they teach them common sense any more?

Well if it is a stick shift you just need to push the cluch in. If it isn't also obstructed.

Even still, I think most cars are designed so their brakes will overpower the engine. I know that often, after emergency braking, you sometimes need to restart even an automatic.

Just use a lot of force. you will get it out, especially when you are about to die.

Then again, it did not say on the tape whether the brake pedal was obstructed too. They just said "we can't brake" which could imply that the gaspedal was pushed in with more force than the brake pedal could brake (does that make any sense?)

If you try it in your own car, hit the gas hard and with your other foot, hit the brakes, you might find it pretty hard to slow down...

When my gas pedal got stuck hitting the brake slowed me down enough to give me the time to think to throw it into neutral, and the brakes smoked like hell. If it ever happens again I have the experience now to know to just throw it out of gear. I wouldn't recommend trying to brake with the gas held down just for the hell of it. You could mess up your breaks and the engine.

The crazy thing is these people had time to think to call 911 but not to put it in neutral, that is crazy!! My braking to throwing it into neutral was maybe a second. I think I only reached about 80k though. But I was about 10m from a 90 degree turn and a concrete wall. It could have been ugly.

Had this happen to me once. I jammed on the brakes and held them down til I figured out what happened.
