I don't think that will ever change. The Military is just a drain on the pool of 'carrots' the government gets to dangle in front of us around election times.

Giving them more money reduces the amount of our own money they get to bribe us with. If the state of the Military ever became a real issue with the average Canadian, then the government might see funding it properly as a vote mining opportunity. Until then, they'll get the funding they need to make sure we don't get invaded by Panama or some other unfriendly place with an actual Military.

you say that but then the Canuck general jo p public likes to laugh and belittle the CF and we are faced with articles such as this one. I think it really IS important to most Canadians it just isn't getting the attention it deserves.

Preparing for a previous war that won't happen in the same way again is foolish, especially for a country that for whatever reason (mostly because of endless procurement bungles) simple can't afford it. Our navy should be strictly littoral now, for interdiction of drug smuggling and human trafficking, and not for pointless "projections" of our alleged strength on the other side of the planet. Some dick-measuring contest where we pretend we're capable of the same effort we put together in World War Two is sheer fiscal insanity. Hell, if the navy became all aerial drones with fewer ships I could care less as long as it's appointed task of coastal protection could be done more efficiently and effectively.

Considering it's been about 203 years since our last war in Canada, I don't think that's much of a concern.

you said it Bart, I recall on many occasions Canada trying to decide 'what' it could deploy if there were resources available. Over the past 20 years I have lost count at the reports from our own media how were can only deploy one ship, or one sub or a squadron of jets..nothing else to deploy!

It's also a very sad state for one of only two nations in the entire world that has access to three oceans not to be a naval power.

There's no way that Canada would ever be able to afford to build/maintain the kind of naval force that would be required to patrol three maritime fronts. Keep in mind that, if you want to compare the WW2 era to today, the way DND Procurement does things we probably could build about 20 WW2 destroyers for the cost of one modern-day frigate. When it's as effectively done these days by satellite and air power as it is by surface ships or submarines that kind of monetary investment isn't necessary anyway.
