I like how the only requirement he mentions is the "distinctive look." How ambout things like range, temperature operating ranges, ability to off both a polar bear and enemy soldiers with body armour, etc.

Helmets with Lasers, that's what they should have. That would free their hands for AT, AA, or a Grenade Launcher. That would make them simultaneously have a distinctive look and badass.

I like how the photo in the article is of a .50 cal round, I had visions of rangers running around with TAC-50 rifles.

I think they have addressed those questions by stipulating a bolt action rifle shooting the .308 Winchester (7.62 NATO) round. Although, to be honest, I wouldn't want to bet my ass using that round against a polar bear, in that situation I would much rather have the .50 cal round they showed in the article.

Well they were using the .303 rounds before, so a .308 should have slightly better effect against a bear. I think at that point it depends on the muzzel velocity of the round, and by that virtue, the longer the barrel, the better. Obviously the rangers would know what they need, but my guy reaction to a polar bear would be the same, where the fuck is the .50 cal???

With a polar bear I'm wanting something more in the range of a 40mm point detonating grenade.
