I agree that a first time offender should get a lighter punishment than a repeat offender. I applaud her efforts to turn her life around and sober up since, which should work to her advantage.

What I do not get is why her heritage is even a thing, nor her upbringing (the victim of abuse part). Everybody has a story. I doubt anyone would be able to use that story as an excuse for rioting.

Gladue decision by the Supreme court that because of the high percentage of aboriginals in prison and history of racism, a judge has to consider all alternatives before sentencing an aboriginal to prison time.
