FFS, they're wild animals which means you don't go near them because something like this can and did happen.

FFS this is getting overblown. It's not like the sea lion started chowing down on her and tempting the wild creature with bread or whatever it was they were throwing in the water is just asking for confrontation.

Oh yeah... sea lions are killers and attack people! Look out!

I work in Steveston and heard nothing about it yesterday. No buzz on the streets about it anyway.

Having worked up there for several years I've seen my share of ignorant people thinking it's fun to feed birds and mammals regardless of the numerous signs telling people not to.

Though I must admit that seeing people on several occasions buy French fries from take out windows then toss a few in the air for the gulls always made me chuckle. The two or so gulls would very quickly alert 20 others to swarm over for their share and freak the idiots out. Then other people would get annoyed that the gulls would harass them while they dined outside. Well, duh!

Leopard seals (sea leopards) are another kettle of fish entirely. Fortunately, they tend to inhabit the waters around Antarctica.

But yeah leopard seals like too munch down on the odd penguin too?

As I understand it the best way to tell the difference between a seal and a sea lion is the sea lion will walk on it's fins on land. The fins are larger.

Just had a horrible thought. I hope that guy didn't think the little girl was a penguin.

I was just joking when I said that. Then I saw the one below and now I'm not so sure it's a joke.

I was diving off Race Rocks a few years back....well quite a few years back and I had one take a tug on my fin but it let go quickly. Like I said before curiosity. I've also had a few encounters with orcas, a couple greys and a humpback. They were usually younger and curious too. Dolphins and porpoises were always coming right up to you as were harbour seals.

Leopard seals are nightmare fuel. Between the teeth, the cold demonic eyes, and the snake-like expanding jaw it's like they're an experiment the Elder Things down in Antarctica were brewing up in their damned city that escaped into the wild and started breeding. And eating. 8O

Wow. Freaking media circus in the 'hood today. As I said before way overblown but a way to raise awareness to remind people the definition of wild animals vs. pets. An awareness that unfortunately some people will forget in a few days or weeks.

Lots of chatter amongst locals today about the stupidity of what happened and how annoying it is to see people feeding the wildlife and thus enabling this kind of thing to happen. Apparently there a few regular sea lions that hang out since they are accustomed to handouts from the ignorant.

A fisherman I know mentioned today that he thought it was humorous that many parents were not letting their children go even close to the edge of the docks which they should be making sure of anyway.

Fins?

Alternative flippers. I was just wondering how the hell he could mistake the girl for a penguin. They've likely never seen a penguin.

Escapee from the aquarium perhaps?
