I don't see the difference between the death penalty for a murderer and this.

You don't see the difference between being dead, or cutting a man's spine and leaving him as an invalid for 50+ years?

$1:
Amnesty International is outraged by the sentence: ”Paralyzing someone as punishment for a crime would be torture,” said Ann Harrison, Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director at Amnesty International.

“That such a punishment might be implemented is utterly shocking, even in a context where flogging is frequently imposed as a punishment for some offences, as happens in Saudi Arabia.”

The difference is that killing someone doesn't burden everyone else in the country afterwards. Once he's paralyzed, he's going to need constant care/nursing. Why would the justice system hand down a sentence that punishes everyone else in society? Stupid.

I was talking about the "eye for an eye"-thing.

I find this repulsive, plain and simple. But no, I don't see the difference between the "eye for an eye"-thing when it comes to murderers, or this.

That's his family's problem, not the rest of the country's.

Sure it's the rest of the country's problem. If I can't get a nurse because she's busy wiping this guy's ass, it's my problem too. If my taxes go up because of the extra care this guy needs, that's my problem.

If I received a sentence of paralysis, I'd either be on the first plane out of the country or off the top of the first 10+ storey building I could find.

Not in Saudi Arabia

That's a bit hard to do when you are in jail... In Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has a theocratic monarchy and this is the way they like things to work. Replace their government with a theocratic republic like we're seeing in Egypt and etc. and the sentence would be no different.

Unless the Wahhabist religion is replaced with something more moderate then there's really little point in complaining about this.

Among our dumber citizens, aka SUN readers and FOX viewers, this kind of retributive sentiment is quite popular (judging by comments threads) when similar crimes are committed in Canada and the US.

Well be fair, they usually want the guy killed after he`s been tortured, so according to Lemmy at al, he won`t cost us any money and it's all good.
