Here is an idea. How about we stand up a large enough force to ensure the integrity of our borders up North. At the same time pour money into new alternative energy sources which will eventually replace or at least supplement oil. Then proceed to sell that technology around the world making piles of $$$. Meanwhile Russia can spend all the money it wants trying to get at resources that are worth les and less because we have managed to replace them.

Wont happen soon enough.

Though I don't see why CKA couldn't organise a mass-mailing campaign. Everytime an article comes out like this, email your local MP and preffered party leader, be them Tory, Grit, NDP, Bloc, or Green, explaining that what Harper had originally promised was not enough, and that his comprimise solution, which isn't even off the ground yet, isn't proceeding fast enough nor will it be enough to fend off the states, the ruskies, etc.

Well this would take a while, but from now until resources even start being extracted from the Arctic is alos very far off. Right now countries are just jockeying for position, but nobody is really ready to start removing anything.

Not to mention that alot of the technology we need to reduce our oil dependency is already there. We just need to start to switch over to it.

Yea, but how many people know that? The media is always talking about hydrocarbons.

Lots of people, the northern store in Baker lake was outfitting 26 exploration camps last year and one gold mine.Thats just one small area on the barrenlands and a whole bunch of different companies.
There's lot's of Canadians up there right now.
With the price of gold rising there will be major exploration up there this summer.

$1:
In turn, Moscow has reacted angrily to suggestions by Nato that it could enter the fray in the far north. The Nato secretary general, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, said in January that the security alliance needed a military presence in the region to defuse tensions. "I would be the last one to expect military conflict - but there will be a [Nato] military presence," he said, adding: "It should be a military presence that is not overdone, and there is a need for political and economic co-operation."

Russia's envoy to Nato, Dmitry Rogozin, said yesterday he would not discuss military co-operation with Nato in the Arctic because it was "totally absurd" for countries not abutting the region to get involved.

Well if Russia doesn't want it, then maybe its something we should do.

Well unless the media over-hypes the new "Gold Rush," I doubt that word of mith will be enough to convince all Canadians that there is more than just oil up there.

Look at Sig Pigs first post in this thread for example. He had hydrocarbons in mind, not the mineral deposits, and based on his tradeset, he's likely one of the more intelligent guys out there. What does that say for the average ignorant Canadian?

We try and keep the gold part a secret,it's not easy.
The investors know it's there and most of the oil is offshore so that's where the dispute really is.
Geologically speaking the russians could be right in their ownership claim.
Most of the article's I have read say theres enough hydrocarbons in the arctic to supply the whole world for 3 years.

So Russia's planted a flag at the North Pole. And we've claimed borders to the North Pole since around 1900. Plus there's internationally recognized limits regarding shipping and transit, etc.
So any Canadians or Russians have a problem with something like this? Note how the lines are straight and don't recognize wiggly little claims by weaselly arseholes trying to snitch more than their share.

Fuck no. As the crow would fly if it wasnt so cold up there, both water in the US Zone and Russias Zone is closer to our shorelines than their respective shorelines.

I mentioned Hydrocarbons because it was mentioned in the article.

$1:
Russia has released plans to create a dedicated military force to patrol the Arctic, where it is laying claim to billions of tonnes of hydrocarbons.

And I have also heard of untapped oil and gas deposits being mentioned over and over again. I just thought that was what people were after because we already have access to gold and diamonds etc. The other resources have been frozen and unaccessible until now.

Very true, the oil and gas is most accessible when thing's are frozen, that's why I have allways suggested forward camps and a drilling program, not just to drill for resources but to also map the ocean floor and do core samples that would show that's our rock where they planted the flag.
Plus it give's us a big time presence up there.
