Honestly, this is one of the less stupid questions I've been asked about airplanes. The stupidest was a toss-up between "Why are we wasting all of this time de-icing?" and "If there is an autopilot, why are their pilots in the cockpit?"

Both questions were asked by people with graduate degrees.

That this isn't even the worst airplane-related misunderstanding by a major presidential candidate this election cycle. Wondering why the windows don't roll down is much less bone-headed than thinking an unmanned airplane has the power to turn Pakistani men 16 and older into enemy combatants just by bombing them.

I like all the braying asses on this topic who condemn Romney's supposed ignorance when, in fact, most airliners have cockpit windows that are opened all the time for service and maintenance. In one case, a 747 had to land in Indonesia with an open window after the cockpit glass was frosted by volcanic ash.
