Almost 200 drug offences amongst members of the Canadian Army in a WHOLE YEAR! The majority of them for SIMPLE POSSESSION!

C'mon, this is crap. Consider this. Most soldiers are young men, in the age group prone to committing crimes.

If 80 000 soldiers, most of them under 30, are committing a mere 200 drug offences a year, then, we're doing o.k.

You can stop right there Tegan, to think that we would let someone drunk or stoned anywhere near a weapon is insulting.

You have to also consider that the military acceptance standards are quite low right now. Some of the new recruits I have to deal with have very bad habits, usually something like manners and respect would be hammered into you on your trade course. Now the schools are under too much pressure just to push people though the machine. This also creates a back log for PAT (personnel awaiting training) Platoons, these are people who are waiting up to a year for room on a course. Since they have no military training they usually spend their days doing menial labour (filling sand bags, moving office furniture, shovelling snow ect), or they just sit in a classroom and hang out for 6 hours out of the day. Mix boredom with the feeling of abandonment and a steady $1200 pay check with no expenses and these kids start to slip.

If you knew anything about the military you would see that the frag vest (bullet proof vest, for you Tegan) is not CADPAT, it is the general American version UCP (Universal Camouflage Pattern). Add that to the shape of the vest and you have an American Soldier in a Santa Suit. So don’t presume you have valid opinion on anything remotely related to the Canadian military. You cant even tell the difference between the Canadian military and that of a foreign country.

Ok, that makes sense, but how is the drug abuse problem handled? A soldier smoking pot occasionally is less of a problem than a commander doing crack.

Right the 47 year old Lt Col. are the ones getting charged.... Just admit it you dont know what you are talking about. Most, I would ponder a guess at somewhere around 60%, of those charged have been in the military less than 2 years. With another 30% of the others being in less than 5 years.

I think what many Canadians are concerned about is that during the Vietnam war there were suggestions that American soldiers on drugs may have killed each other, their officers, and/or civilians. Whether true or false, a small number or a larger number, the potential for any similar situation with Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan causes concern for ordinary Canadians.

Wow, I have to tip my hat to that. That has got to be the most insulting and ignorant implication I have ever heard from a person on this forum, and I have had many conversations with streaker. It may cause concern for you, but you don’t have even rudimentary knowledge of the Canadian Military.

I thought it was a funny picture, I didnt take the picture. Like most on this site I googled. Just entered Army and Santa and this is what I got. If you actually think that everyone's avatar on here is really them you are in more trouble than I thought.

I have a friend in the military, he does ecstacy, coke and smokes weed on the regular. But, he is in better shape than I am and has not yet had any international tours.

I am not sure how many other military personnel do this kind of shit...It must be plenty though.

How long has your friend been in? Is he reg force?

It might seem like a lot since he probably has 3 or 4 other *edit*buddies*edit* who are just like him. Its going to bite him one of these days though, if he stays a Cpl and never takes any course higher than a PLQ he might be able to slip under the radar for quite a while. All it takes is for one of his buddies to get caught though then they are all going to hang. I have seen it happen before.

Well I remember a few years ago, he said he could join, and he completely stopped smoking pot for 6 months. He did his testing, and joined up in an infrantry division (sorry I'm not too versed on the military system). He spends most of his days doing equivalent of blue collar labour, odd jobs and such. I do see him on the regular running through town with a shitload of bags on his back with more trainees in military fatigues beside him.

But continued his drug habit about 3-4 months after joining. He was a regular user of recreational drugs before joining up.

I don't think he poses a threat since he can put the drugs down when he needs. However, the effects of prolongued battlefield stress might bring out a few demons.
