I wonder if our current Federal government is going to leave cooked books behind them too, if they go down this fall.

Let's hope so.
WTF are the auditor generals doing that allows this sort of thing?

In the ministry I work for, we are already preparing another budget. We just prepared one before the election was called.

The AG's do their jobs correctly. The politicians usually just ignore what the AG's have to say.
Going by the shredding binge the PC's were doing on their way out I'd say the Dippers are probably encountering all kinds of fucked-up things and deeply entrenched good ol' boy antics that are going back at least to the Klein era. It's gonna be one hell of a fight to fix even a portion of it. A dynasty lasting fourty-four years most likely leaves an Augean Stables-sized mess behind it when it finally gets the boot.

Seems to me if the auditors are doing their job, they would find and report any cooked books. This sounds like those audits of FN bands that say everything is OK, then turns out it isn't. Government auditors should be given whatever tools they need to make sure the books are what they should be.

AG'S don't seem to have much power except to report. The federal AG calling in the RCMP over the Senate expenses mess is about as far as I've ever seen one go. If the winning parties held grudges against the previous governments and wanted the loses prosecuted then we'd have seen things like the entire Chretien cabinet going to prison for the scams and stunts they kept doing.

Seems they are guilty of the same sin that they are to guard against.

Can't bite the hand that feeds. Same for any AG as it is for any employee anywhere else in the world.
