I feel you shouldn't have to turn over your password on a routine random search without cause but I doubt he'll win anyways in today's climate.

The difference is that this is the border, they have much greater powers. It's the same deal going south. I don't really have such a problem with that.

When travelling internationally, regardless of which country it is, customs officers have the right to inspect anything and everything you bring with you.

Facebook account password? E-mail password? If not, then how would the respond to an applocker? How deep into my internet life are they permitted to intrude by having access to my device? Where am I allowed to have security, if at all?

I don't think I'll bother traveling, I can deal with judgmental pricks right here and I don't lose personal security for it.

Like it or not, your right to privacy does not exist when dealing with international borders and Customs. And it hasn't for a long time.

Simple solution is to get a drop phone. They are cheap contain only the data you put in (phone numbers). Once your trip is over remove the numbers and keep the phone till next trip.

You don't want your privacy violated don't give them a chance to try.

So I have to provide them with a list of all my passwords to the things that can be accessed from my phone? That is almost certainly untenable. At that point it isn't even privacy I care about. Writing down passwords I've never written down before for someone I don't know or trust is a security issue.

That's is the debate. The CBSA is charged with keeping illegal, dangerous and illicit things from entering Canada. I don't see how bringing a cell phone is part of that mandate, since the cell phone is legal and anything on it can be brought in through other means without a customs inspection. Violating your privacy won't fulfill their mandate any better.

A mountain out of a mole hill and little PD won't travel now because of this. Fuck me, I've been crossing borders for over 30+ years and have never had anything more invasive than opening the trunk of a vehicle or a suitcase. My own experience since 9/11 is that the rudest border guards tend to be the CBSA. It's almost like they take it as a personal insult that you would dare travel outside Canada.

If someone is running drugs, coming here to work illegally or perhaps an illegal alien trying to enter Canada for a marriage of convinance, there's usually emails, texts or IM conversations that would indicate, that could be the reason for their travel here.
