Seems entirely affordable. Especially with oil prices supposedly staying low for years to come - hell raise the tax so that we're paying what we were before the oil slump. That will reduce consumption and give lots of money to the govt. If you want, do what BC did, make the carbon tax revenue neutral with refunds for low income earners. Win win, Wynne.

Just another tax grab from the Wynne spendthrifts. Anyone who thinks climate change is the reason to raise gas prices must be completely bonkers.

Fight climate change...... ROTFL

Guys like andy have never met a tax they didn't like. He also thinks the Libs are never dishonest and would never throw this into general revenue. ROTFL

Our Liberals didn't. Did just what I said, although with Christie Krunch they stopped raising the tax as they should have. I think they stopped the cheques, too.

3 things.

If the government gives you an estimate on anything, double it and start there.

When gas prices go up it doesn't just affect gas. It affects everything from turnips to toilet paper.

Believe the opposite of anything Andy tells you about what's happening in BC.

But, the poor people!

How are poor people going to afford the increased cost of the basics like groceries?

Gas taxes go well beyond drivers and this particular tax is nothing more than a symbolic gesture at the climate change crowd all while increasing general revenues.

The OPP told us she was the best thing for their salaries, I mean Ontario.

I am sure the OPP are doing their part by driving hybrid vehicles and electric cars.

If you read my quote carefully, maybe have somebody help you with the big words, you will see it contains the answer about the poor people.

Ontario is $315 billion in the hole. This will NOT be revenue neutral. I can guarantee there won't be a reduction in sales tax on things like food and clothes, all of which will see their prices increase to make up for the increased fuel costs.
So even if you take public transit or ride a bike, you're still gonna be fucked over by this new tax.

I doubt that a tax this size is much of a business killer. Unless some government somewhere drops a 20-cent-per-litre carbon tax the harm done isn't going to be very large. Compared to what's happened in terms of economic catastrophe over the last twenty months thanks to a collapse in the basic price of oil any damage from these kind of taxes is minimal. The greater problem with them is the same problem that happens with all allegedly dedicated taxes, in that the governments simply can't be trusted to do with the revenue what they say they will and the money ends up dispersed to fuck knows what kind of slush funds and boondoggles when it mysteriously ends up in the murky pool of "general revenues".

The trouble with any excise tax is that a portion of the tax is borne by the producer.

Image

The area of the green rectangle is the portion of the tax revenue paid by the consumer, the area of the orange rectangle represents the portion of the tax that gets paid by the producer. Even with an inelastic good like gasoline, where the demand curve is steeper, some fraction of the tax still gets saddled on the producer. Plus, of course, any tax will reduce the quantity sold, which means lower revenues for the oil industry. I'm pretty sure Alberta oil producers aren't really keen for another pair of shots to the nutsack for their industry right now.

Ontario's plan doesn't include that so you're "entirely affordable" comment means dick-all to the poor people you 'fight' for.

Tax something in a way that it affects multiple products such as a gas tax would do. Forcing the poor to spend even more on life essentials then give them a small amount, 5%-10%, of what this tax actually cost them back. Then run around claiming how great this tax is for the poor and look how the government helped them.

Yes that is andyt's plan.
