There's an awful lot of Catholics leaving the church and preparing to leave if this pope acknowledges gay marriage. Most importantly, the African component of the church, its fastest growing area, absolutely will leave over this.

No, they realize that the church has to move out of the dark ages. Who knows, maybe more people will.

No they don't. They way watered down the statement on gays that Francis had suggested, so it doesn't sound at all that they are moving out of the dark ages. Francis could have over ridden them but chose not to. As Bart said, the Africans are very much in the dark ages. But I also read the US cardinals were very much opposed to easing off on gays.

What they really need is to allow women in the clergy.

For now, women in the clergy and priests having the right to marry are more important. The gays can wait a little bit longer.

Married clergy will come first as that was once the norm, and in some cases, they allow for it now.

The Anglican Church is filling up with ex-Catholic clergy who got married. It's a safe haven for them ... not very different but more tolerant.

This was already the Church's view. Catholic schools teach the theories of the big bang and evolution.
