Now there's a horse that had dreams of being a Chuckwagon pony but now it's lungs are so messed up from all the car exhaust fumes it would have trouble running a 1/2 block.

How often are caleche horses put down per year, vs chuckwagon racing? How many hours a year do the caleche horses work vs chuckwagon horses?

That's the most idiotic protest movement yet. The caleche goes way, way, Way back to the 19th century and there is hardly an epidemic of this sort of mishap.

BTW, Niagara-on-the-lake operates caleche in town and I believe I remember them on old Quebec City as well.

It's a nice tradition. Ban the cars, instead.

It would be interesting to compare these horse's vitals to that of chuckwagon horses, to see which gets more stimulated when they see the stable door open and they know its time to go to work.

You see Chuck wagon horses around Calgary the other eleven months of the year?
Let's compare the health of a thoroughbred racer with that of a Mongolian tribesman's pony.

You lost me completely on this one, why would they stick around Calgary, they have a 4 month long race circuit to complete.

In CALGARY??

Anyway, I"M all for things like caleches so that the skills required for the handling of draught animals will be propagated and carried on. Our graet-great grandchildren will have to relearn how to breed and handle draught animals again when the petroleum runs out.

If you are puzzled about my response to your last post, I thought that your comparison of purpose bred "Chuck Wagon" racers and the old grey mares that quietly haul around caleches in tree-lined city streets is very much an apples and road apples comparison.

There are 12 racing weeks/weekends from May to August, kind of like NASCAR, just replace Daytona with Calgary, the Stampede is the biggest but it isn't a championship thing.

I'm not comparing the horses, I'd just like to see which gets excited to go to work. I have a feeling the old grey mare feels like saying screw this job, more often than the chuckwagon horses.

Horses, like cats, like predictable routine. They are herd animals, not tricksie simians like us. Young horses might get a bit exited about "new" but I think that they prefer boring safety.
