Not much of a surprise given the US military's dependence on space for communications, intelligence etc. Frankly, I'm surprised they don't have a couple dozen space fighters based on the Space shuttle (or something similar) already.
They didn't because it is against
a treaty the US signed. A treaty they are considering
leaving.
As I understand it, the Outer Space Treaty doesn't forbid the development of weapons platforms for use in space, but rather WMD systems (Like
FOBS) and military installations.
After all, several nations that signed the Outer Space Treaty developed ASAT weapons based on the surface (USA, USSR, China), so why not build a squadron of fighters based at an air force base somewhere, ready to be rolled out in times of need?
