This article shows why there should be more cooperation between Canada and the U.S. This article states that Canada can build 15 ships for $30 billion. That is $2 billion per ship. It states that the U.S. is getting the ships for $1.3 billion a peice. I read in another article that the U.S. was paying $1.2 billion for the first ship, and $781 million for the next nine ships.

$781 million is a far cry from $2 billion. What if the two governments approached Fincantieri united as a single entity? We both negotiate the cost down to $781 per ship (or lower) as a single order for two shipyards. You get them built to American specs. If you want to "Canadianize" them then you do it on your time and your dime after delivery. You want 15 ships, we want 10. We both want to build them in our own countries and put our own people to work. We both like the design of the ship. Canada gets the ships that they need at an affordable cost, and they put Canadians to work.
I am sorry to say that you guys let your navy fall to shit. That is 100% on you. You do not get to blame the U.S. or Trump for that one. That happened long before anyone ever heard of Trump. That said the U.S. has a vested interest in seeing that Canada maintains the ability to build warships. You went from basically nothing to the worlds 3rd largest navy in WW2. That is a very impressive feat given your population at the time. Hopefully that will not be needed again in the future, but the times are uncertain to say the least. The west may very well depend on Canada duplicating their phenomenal feat of putting together an ass kicking navy in short order all over again. Once an industry is gone, it usually does not come back. I say the two countries should bargain as one. Lets both get the same reduced cost, and both build ships in our own countries together.
Canada's track record of going on its own for defense procurement pretty much blows. Hell the U.S. has no problem buying an Italian designed ship, why would you have a problem teaming up with the U.S. to get a drastic price cut in a much needed naval platform? Time to knock off the petty bullshit and procure much needed assets at affordable prices for both countries. We are stronger together.
