The point is that as a public servant he is still required by law to carry out the will of the Government and if they tell him to state publicly that a pause isn't needed he's got two choices, whether he agrees with either or not. He can either resign or make that statement.
Really think Leslie's merely a sock puppet? Check his cv and see if you still think he needs the approval of a politican to secure a good position. You do the man a serious injustice given his accomplishments.

We all know that policy isn't made by the Military, they simply react to it. So I suspect that General Leslie had those two options given to him and chose to take the Governments point of view for whatever reasons.
We all know that coffee shop prattle shouldn't be used to pass judgement on issues and on people. That the man may be stating fact doesn't fit your pre-concieved notion of his character, does it?
