Sounds like two assholes each breaking the law got caught and charged. Where's the problem?

Charges should never be laid in non-lethal self-defense when the attacker sustains no permanent injury. The knife might indicate the guy's got some other issues but it wasn't used so it should be non-relevant. Hopefully this one gets tossed out of court when it gets there.

Probation.

"Probation in criminal law is a period of supervision over an offender, ordered by a court in the stead of serving time in prison."

A judge desided that rather than have him in jail, he should be free but has to promise not to commit any crimes. Gee I wonder if that will work.

Your definition of probation is poor. Probation is a period of supervision, but not necessarily instead of jailtime. It's a sentence in and of itself.

You said "he was let go before his time was done". Incorrect. He wasn't let out early on probation, he was sentenced to probation. How do you know that a judge made that determination? Maybe jailtime wasn't an option for the offence he committed.
