Is that income or sales taxes (I don't know if the US has a federal sales tax like Canada does)?

If it's sales taxes, then I'm all for it. If they are spending more, then they should be paying more too.

If it's income taxes, it doesn't bother me all that much either, because it's been twisted to make it sound like taxes are making the rich poor, when in fact a lot of them pay a smaller percentage than those poorer than them. And who is hurt more by paying 15% of their income in taxes - someone making $2 million per year or someone making $30,000 per year?

Conservatives in particular should dig out their Bibles and re-read Luke 21:1-4 to try and help them understand the difference in how percentage affects the poor and the rich.

That's why poor people are outraged that some of the 1% pay less percentage in taxes than them.

The mean income for the bottom 40% is 30,000 The top 1% averages 78 times that amount, so shouldn't they be paying 78 times as much as the average, at the very least? (ie under a flat tax system). So the bottom graph makes me very angry.

Here's what I don't understand with this class warfare 'progressive tax' mindset.

With so-called progressive taxation the wealthy can exploit tax laws to reduce their tax burden to a level that is sometimes lower than the percentage mid-income people pay.

So if we implemented a flat tax with no exemptions and no deductions the welathy would pay more than they do now.

But for some head-up-the-a** reason the leftists consistently oppose a flat tax even though it does what they say they want.

If we implemented a progressive system with no exemptions or deductions, the rich would pay even more. And the poor would not have to pay taxes in their measly incomes. Cain's 9 9 9 for instance would be a huge shift of the tax burden to the lowest income earners. And of course those nines are pure figmennt, the rate would have to be a lot higher than that.

I believe it is total federal taxes, so income, capital gains, estate, etc. The USA does not have a federal sales tax.

Because flat taxes are more of the same. Say you institute a 10% flat income tax on all Americans - with no deductions and no exceptions. Who will feel that 10% more - the guy earning $10,000/year working at Walmart, or the guy on Wall Street earning 10 million?

Sure the Wall Street guy pays $1 million, but still has $9 million leftover, which is a very comfortable life. Meanwhile, the Walmart employee loses $1000 and is left with $9000. How comfortable do you think his life is going to be?
