The Olympics are not about the human spirit & have little to do with athletic excellence; they are a multi-billion dollar industry backed by powerful elites, real estate, construction, hotel, tourism and television corporations, working hand in hand with their partners in crime: government officials & members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Protesting the Olympics in the street will not do anything but make the protestors look like thugs, idiots and irrational people.

The best impact is to boycott the advertisers, RBC and Coke Cola to start and any other corporation that benefits financially from the Olympics.

-- in short, get on with the games and if you have something to protest, do it with the pocket book, not on our streets. --

I never really grasped how the olympics were not for the lower class population until I saw the huge ticket prices. I was also convinced by the parties held for the politicians, the corporate elite and the financially wealthy. When someone I knew could get tickets for free to every event because they were friends with a certain mayor, I shook my head. And here I was unable to afford even a single ticket.

But I am not siding with the protestors either. Where were they when I tried to vote out Gordon Campbell? Where were they when news had long been heard of Vancouver being a possible spot for the olympics? No, they only showed up in full force after it was a done deal. I'm suspecting the reason why was because they wanted the olympics. They wanted their "whine time" in front of the press. No olympics means no attention.

And what's the deal with these protestors comitting acts of vandalism in the name of Aboriginals. How pathetic. I currently work for one of these corporate companies supporting the olympics and in the past 2 weeks we have been hit 3 times. All they do is damage merchandise which in turn raises the cost which lower class people have to pay for. Get a life!

/end rant.

Its a good thing that they shed that kill joy image by Clashing with police, throwing vinegar in the eyes of the police, sticks at them etc....

I'll give them credit for not being totally clueless, like they were for much of the past few years, but most people will still see them as killjoys and dummies. Once the games are on, most people understand that politics should be put aside. Using the Olympics as a platform for political protest just undermines their message.

I have sympathy for their points of view and the Issues they are drawing attention too, but despite that, they need to realize that the whole world can't stop just for them. For years now it has been known that part of the Olympic infrastructure will be used to address some of their concerns. So it seems to me that they have made progress and should tone down their opposition to a more appropriate level.

Oh and don't forget them throwing marbles down on the ground to try to trip up the horses some police ride. While they may have a right to protest, they sure have a dangerous way at times to try to get their message heard.

Most protesters don't have much of a pocket book. But if they get some ordinary schlubs thinking about what you said, they will have had a positive impact.

Ya, that pisses me off. Those involved should simply be locked up at least until the Games are over. That can't be tolerated.

Not quite logical. I'm sure the protesters voted, along with you and me, against GC - tho Carole James wasn't somebody to really vote for. But the protesters don't represent a huge constituency, most voters thought Campbell was the better choice.

Protesters have been out before the Olympics started, but trying to organize people to protest just because we applied for the Olympics, that's going to be pretty difficult. I'm sure the critics would have said "how can they protest when we haven't even been awarded the games - they should do that when the games are going on."

And sure, a lot of them want the Olympics, any excuse to get on the media and shake your fist.

The most ridiculous slogan is "no Olympics on stolen native land." Why pick on the Olympics, shouldn't that be "no white people on stolen native land" ie lets get out of BC all together. That includes most of the protesters, since few of them are status Indians.
