Next year will be the 75th.
The government should pay the trip for any WW2 vet that wants to go.

Why not? They paid for the trip back in 1944, right?

They paid for a trip and huge celebration in 1994 (50th anniversary) and another for the 100th of Vimy Ridge last year, so one would hope that they will offer to fly over the handful of D-Day vets still with us.

It would seem this bunch had things very, very much easier than 'B' Company Royal Winnipeg Rifles who landed at 'Mike Red' and 'Mike Green' beaches on the western edge of Courseulles.

$1:
"The bombardment having failed to kill a single German or silence one weapon these companies had to storm their positions 'cold' and did so without hesitation".

The Queen's Own Rifles got fairly shot up when they landed in the first wave. That NFB footage was obviously shot during the landing of a somewhat later wave, after the beach was reasonably secure. Otherwise, those soldiers and sailors would have had their heads down.

Not as sexy as the Hollywood version but the NFB film actually happened without the "enhancements".
