The effect of such a bill would make Bill 101 (French language charter in Quebec) apply to federal workplaces. While in other provinces only federal law would apply to federal industries, in Quebec
provincial language laws would apply. So at the same time these industries would have to comply with Bill 101 and crown corporations and former crown corps (such as CN, Air Canada and VIA Rail) also with the federal Official Languages Act, two acts with totally different objectives.
Once you start down this slippery slope other provinces would want similar treatment for their key issues. And it would allow Quebec control over FJ just by changing Bill 101.

And the Liberal critic on official languages, Pablo Rodriguez, said the party might support Mulcair's bill.
But yesterday, Liberal MP Marlene Jennings told me she would speak against Mulcair's bill in the party caucus before a vote in the Commons on the principle of the bill.
So Mulcair's bill might cause one more division in a party that hardly needs any more.
A rift in the Liberal party? I suppose that's the good news.

It would certainly pit Libs in Quebec against those in ROC. And it also gives us an idea of what life would have been like under the "Coalition".
