Well not to take anything away from this tradgedy, but why does the mother not give it to her daughter, I mean I would expect her to recieve it down the road when this woman passes on anyways? You get to name three people on your form, Before I went the last time I had my Wife, Mother and for shits and giggles I put down Queen Elizabeth!! I wonder what would of happened with that one if I had of gotten snuffed, if they really would have followed my requests! lol

Ya I agree, I mean it is up to the soldier to decide who gets it so why doesnt the mother give it up.

I realize it is a little late for this but this is probably somethign they should have discussed beforehand, but again people tend to avoid such uncomfortable converstions.

[huh]I thought mom would have given it up as well.

I bought 3 minatures of every gong and gave them to the kids and wife. I figured they earned some recognition for sticking it out while I was gone.

The way I read it, the mom didn't get any. The woman he dated at the time he filled out the paperwork did, which was not the same woman.

I think she has a case. I think that, in this day and age, it is pretty common mom, dad and kids do not share the same household. Children should get something to remember their parent by who died in combat, even when the parents are divorced or where never even married. Just out of courtesy.

I say give em out to the whole family, kinda like tic tacs or cookies. Seriously the soldier picks who it goes to, if one of the owners of the medal want to give it up all the power to them. The soldier picks who it goes to, if the ex wife doesnt like it tough, she can beg one of the ones who received it to give it up.

It's not about the ex-wife. It's about the child. The Grandchild. Why doesn't gramma or grandpa give up one?

My thoughts exactly, the Ex can ask the grandparents of the child to give up their medal.
Personally I have been gradually loosing my respect for the Canadian medal system, granted the story about overhauling the overseas medals really put my apathy into overdrive.

It must be a tough decision to make to name just 3 people. I feel that considering the agony the member had to deal with to make this choice that his or her selections be honoured.

Yea, it's a bit of a pain in the ass. For me I wanted to put down mom obviously, but then who deserves the medal more afterwards? My Biological dad, my Stepdad who raised me for 15 years, my little brother Rob for being dedicated to what I do and helping Mom out when I left (now that I'm in he wants to join reserves), and I give it to Rob it would cause animosity if I didn't give it to Mike, my girlfriend (if she and mom get one who gets the last?), what about surviving grandparents, etc.

Eventually I said fuck it. If I die, the 2 medals I don't assign to any one person would also go to my mother as part of my estate, and she can decide from there.

Im not a fan of the sacrifice medal period, its like a little tombstone you can fit in your pocket. That's just me though.
