Why do people try and paint the Canadian military as this horribly ugly thing. An evil corrupted monster that must be kept on a short chain, and must never be trusted.

Because it fits their agenda.

Valid concerns are a different story.

I know, it just burns me when people try to scuff the high level of integrity and professionalism in the CF. All so they can get their 15 min of glory. :x

I disagree, Im not about to say the CF can do no wrong; a good example would be the Captain on HLTA that held up a cab driver in Cyprus. For the vast majority of members however respect and discipline is a part of your everyday life in the CF. The CF has an above average amount of personal integrity and professionalism, especially when it comes to the public.
It does vary from person to person though, I know some guys who as soon as they take the uniform off they feel that can act however they want.

Oh I was disagreeing that the military is average.

Oh I know most people dont, just a militant few. I was mainly thinking of 3 or 4 that come on the forum XD. Still some days it just annoys the hell out of me, considering how hard I work at my job for someone to come by and poop on it. Its akin to spending 4 hours cleaning the kitchen to have the kids come in 15 min later to turn into a disaster.

Not attracting the best of the best, but we train to be the best. I can say for certain I am a better person after joining the military.

Very few professions have the expectations of their employees that the military does, and very few professions have employees that would be able to carry out those exacting expectations.

Military expectations are more than that of any other civilian job though.

Yeah, jumping into the Bering Sea at 3AM is a regular expectation of a grocery bagger.

4 weeks ago roughly 20 people I work with were told they are leaving for Germany in 5 days to take part in NATO training. It was expected that they were to put their personal life on hold for a month to go to europe and live in the woods.

Nurses, firefighters, police ect are expected to do alot, but a military nurse, firefighter, and police have the same standards as civilian professionals do with the added bonus of military expectations.
There is a reason it is illegal to have a union in the military.

Is it a regular expectation in the military too?

just one of the many. They vary depending upon which element you serve in.

I could order a military clerk to asssit in disarming a bomb, if they refused they could very easily see jail time.
