And it looks like there was a botched rescue attempt that led to the death of 34 hostages, with 25 possibly escaping.

According to the story 25 people were rescued. That's not a 'botched' rescue attempt.

Well, 34 dead hostages to save 25 hostages doesn't sound like a successful one either.

As opposed to doing nothing and letting 59 people die? I'm sure the Algerians did the best they could with the resources they had on hand and they deserve credit for doing what they did.

The onus of responsibility for the deaths rests 100% on the retrograde jackals who committed the crime.

Agreed, there's only so much you can do with trying to save hostages held by terrorists, but it sounds like something went wrong if so many hostages died. I wouldn't describe the results as being successful.

Al Jazeera is reportng that all of the hostages are dead.

Russia Times (cable TV) suspects British or French involvement in the rescue.

Associated Press is confirming (or parroting) the Reuters report.

Can not find anywhere that said 34 hostages killed. Does sound like the Algerians acted preciptously.

Gotta love the name Battalion of Blood.

So far from what I e been reading the reports of dead hostages are all over the place. The Guardian has a good love blog going with rogue latest information.

So far it looks like the Algerians went it alone without letting the UK or France know in advance.

$1:
ANI and Qatar-based Al Jazeera reported that 34 of the captives and 15 of their captors had been killed when government forces fired from helicopters at a vehicle. Those death tolls, far higher than confirmed by the local source, would contradict the reports that large numbers of foreigners escaped alive.

From the article I linked. Seemingly, absolutely nobody knows what the hell happened, the more I read reports.

An update as of this evening. It's still not entirely clear on what has happened.

(when I posted this link it had been last updated at 8:56pm EST)
