I don't follow racing but it is somewhat ironic that after so many years in a dangerous sport he succumbs to this type of injury.

I think it may be time for a review on the quality of ski helmets as this is the 2nd case I have heard about this week.

$1:
Two rescuers arrived quickly at the scene and called in two others to help evacuate Schumacher who had been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

He was dominating. I seem to recall him the F1 point total like every year. I hope he pulls through.

My dad and I loved to hate Schumacher when I was a kid, back in Jacques Villeneuve's heyday. Aweful that his son was there to witness the crash.

I can't believe how many times I've totally been wrecked on a ski hill, never hurt my head, and never wore a helmet. The only time I wore a helmet was when I was racing.

I was never very crazy about Schumacher as a driver, but I do hope he pulls through this.

It certainly does not sound good.

Nope.

medically induced coma, one operation on the brain, a second operation canceled however.

Top Gear's Richard Hammond pulled through a serious accident, looks like a waiting game now.

The human body astonishes me. I recall that accident, and Hammond was running a jet powered dragster (his first time in one) on a track without guide rails. ( I think it was the Top Gear airport?) The dragster blew a tire, and it flipped upside down and went off track where the roll bar became a farm implement and Hammond's face basically was used as an anchor to stop the dragster. Which is why drag tracks have fences. And Hammond is basically fine.

Schumacher (and Natasha Richardson) hit their heads on a rock, and it's a pretty big deal. Schumacher was even wearing a helmet! Must have been a pretty hard hit.

Last I heard, the doctors say Schumacher is fighting for his life. Not a big fan of Schumacher in the same way I'm not a fan of Vettel these days in F1 (they win because of their car and not their skill) but I do hope he pulls through this.

I'm pretty sure that professional drivers must always have it in the backs of their minds that they will end up as organ donors.

We all should, for that matter.

True, but not much in F1 anymore. The last death was Ayrton Senna in '94 and I can't think of a serious injury recently off the top of my. Compared to Indy and NASCAR, F1 has really cleaned up its act since the bad old days.

Top Gear, interview with Lewis Hamilton about Senna and driving his car;

he doesn't think about it at all, probably the only way they can drive like they do.
