Nope. This kind of thing is not new in the US, where teachers regularly get fired for comments or simply risky photos.
School employees, like all public employees, are Untermenschen in the United States. They are poorly paid, have little or no union power and everything they say or do whether in public or private draws shrill reactionary criticism from parents because "the children! The children!"
America also suffers from this bizarre suburban middle class paranoia where people living in quite comfortable circumstances live in constant fear Maryland, you'll recall, is also where authorities took away a family's chilren because they let the kids walk 1mile home from the park by themselves, despite being an affluent residential area and the kids were like 10 and 8 years old.
Add in to that the fact that so many local decision makers are independently elected, instead of professional employees, they have little choice but to pander to the hysteria.
Also Americans have a penchant for extreme solutions to every perceived problem. It's never written warning or progressive discipline, it's always straight to the nuclear option: "FIRE HER!!!'"
A couple years ago one got fired down in georgia because during her European vacation this was her Facebook page, which was "Promoting alcohol to children" they said.
