As long as they like Starbucks, who cares?

Makes sense. Equality is a dirty word in the States anyway.

Why grades are slipping? Because you care more about their self esteem than you do about teaching. "You don't understand, oh well its not your fault you're a nice kid so don't worry about it. Here have a cookie"

Their idea of Self-Esteem is flawed, it isn't that it's taken away be failure but that it is gained by success, and success only exists in the presence of failure.

The reason why children in the U.S. might not understand the equal sign could be due to textbooks.

Funny. We've managed until now. More lame assed excuses to coddle our further deteriorating next generation. And these are the people that are going to be in charge one day. Lovely thought.

Ah well - At least Walmart should be full staffed in a few years.

"Chinese textbooks provided the best examples for students and that even the best U.S. textbooks, those sponsored by the National Science Foundation, were lacking relational examples about the equal sign," the study said.

It doesn't take a whole chapter in a textbook to explain what an equal sign means or what it does in an equation.

OK I realize this is the US and hopefully not reflective of Canada but what gets me is kids in High School are being taught more difficult math then we were by the time they graduate. If they don't understand how = is used how can they pull off the hard stuff?

I see a lot of comics like George Lopez, Bernie Mac ( RIP ) etc etc about how much white folk fuss over their kids nowadays and how todays kids are pussies and couldn't survive a day in their world. First I thought it was a little over exaggerated but more and more I see they are not too far off the truth.

They should listen to the Brampton boy Russell Peters and beat their kids more ! 8O

The article says the concept of '=' comes in middle school? (Junior High to us)

I'm pretty sure I was using the '=' in the second grade. And there was no confusion.
