Caffeine is not only a powerful stimulant but it can disrupt or damage all the gastro-intestinal way. Add to that the dependance.

What I don't like in this article is that it associated caffeine with energy drinks to fear people. What's the best source of caffeine ? Coffee. They could have said that the intake of caffeine was like X cups of coffee. But no, they decided to pass a subjective message in an objective article.

Not that I approve the sale of pure caffeine. But it is just the way the article is written. There's nothing wrong in taking an energy drink like there's nothing wrong in taking a coffee. The problem is the ABUSE of them. Try to take 10 cups of coffee in 1 hour and tell me how you feel.

Anyway, what's bad is that caffeine powder is sold freely on the internet with almost no warning. It told to take max. 1/16 of a tea spoon. How can you weight that ? No milligrams warning. Big 'container' (to hold 2 spoon of pure caffeine...). Everything is wrong here.

Granted, it would be difficult though. I think the smallest measure I've ever seen is 1/4 tsp, so you'd have to quarter that again... That (as you implied) definitely makes it dangerous.

250mg is two cups of coffee - I think the story is way exaggerating. Caffeine is available in any drugstore in pill form, so using powder is just stupid.

That being said, it's unlikely he'd have followed the directions anyway. Drunks are generally invincible, as I recall.

Yes he did a bad thing but the 'laughing' is not appropriated. I've drunk too much coffee once and it was unsupportable. The shaking, the stomach, the headache, the nausea, etc. This guy took 70 coffees in one shot. He vomited blood with all the other symptoms. That must have been horrible.

There are lots of things that can kill you if ingested in excess. People simply have to exercise common sense, and take responsibility for themselves.

Every time something like this happens, people are screaming for new laws to be put in place, for "someone" to do "something" about it. In some cases, that me be necessary, but for the most part, people simply have to get off their asses and be responsible for their own actions and quit blaming everyone around them for their incompetence.

In this case:

Who brought the caffeine powder to the party? They should have been smart enough to know that something stupid could happen with something that potent in a room full of drunks.

The man himself - was TANKED. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this isn't the first time this guy has done something stupid while drunk. Maybe he should have used his brain and quit drinking at a reasonable (still brain functioning) level of intoxication, where he (or someone else in the room) might have thought to check what the maximum dosage was. He didn't. Sorry, but too f***ing bad for him. HE caused his own death and HE is to blame. Period. It's not up to the rest of the world to look after each individual in their moments of stupidity - drunk or sober.

There are probably 4-5 over the counter drugs that I could kill myself with in the house right now... and I almost never take anything.
If big brother started getting really serious about everything we can injest, nothing would be sold over the counter anymore... and we'd need a prescription for half of what we buy at the grocery store.

Can someone tell me WHY they sell pure caffeine in a pharmacy?

We extracted this stuff in college and after trying a bit of it, (wet finger dipped in the powder) we decided it was just too dangerous to play around with.
