I remember when I was in high school in social studies class being "persuaded" by the teacher towards voting provincial NDP. That was, I believe, just before a teachers strike that disrupted classes for a few weeks. I was politically confused until after finishing high school. Too much influence I think. Took me a bit to figure out the system for myself.

16 is too young IMO for these decisions. IMO I stress.

Depends on the person. I like to think I was a pretty mature sixteen year old. And I'm sure we all know some exceptionally immature "adults".

The claim that 16 year old's can:

$1:
Weaver noted that 16-year-olds are able to do other things under the law, like drive, drop out of school and get married. They also pay taxes, and can sign up for the military.

is a bit of a misnomer. Kids can only join the "Military" at age 17 and only with their parents consent, even then they can't be deployed. Same with being married. They need permission. Certainly 16 year old's can drive but, only under a stringent graduated licensing system and yes 16 year olds can drop out of school but would we really want kids who drop out of school making the decision about who govern's us?

Here's the litmus test. If this twit thinks 16 year old's are mature enough to vote then, why isn't he also be lobbying to give them the right to drink legally? Mature enough to decided who governs is mature enough to have a beer.

If you're old enough to vote you're old enough to run for office.

If you're old enough to vote you're also not a young offender. If you're old enough to vote, you're old enough to be held to adult standards of conduct in every other aspect of your life. Take your pick, kiddies.

Yup.

Lefties love kids voting, because kids are stupid, kids are selfish,
kids don't think about the future, kids can't do money and budgets.

Kinda like most lefties.

If anything, the voting age should be upped to 25.

And restricted to anyone who pays taxes. The "youth vote" idea is usually only backed by parties that have zero chance of ever taking power anyway. That's why it's so ridiculously easy to dismiss the suggestion altogether.

18 year olds can vote but not drink.

and they're only the LATEST party to discuss 18 year olds voting. Only the Conservatives haven't. gee I wonder why? Perhaps they know too many 16 year olds than can reason better than they can.

No they shouldn't lower it. 16 is not the recognized age of majority. If it ever becomes so, then the right to vote will be automatic. Give the buggers a couple years to choose to become educated or remain as ignorant as a lot of adults.

So, maybe we should take the vote away from 18 year old's and make them wait till 19 or, just drop the drinking age to 18 which IMO makes more sense.

But, since we're on topic. How about a graduated voter system much like the one we use for driving? First, you have to take and pass a course on Provincial and Municipal politics, school boards included then, from age 16 to 18 you get to vote at the municipal level and for local school boards which, after that if you haven't wasted your vote and voted for an idiot as decided a non partisan panel of people who hate children, you get to vote "anonymously" at a Provincial Level. :P

Just make 16 the age of consent if this is what you folks want to do. Make them legal adults at that age and then end mandatory education at age 16 as well.

I don't think we want to. But some jurisdictions have extended the vote to 16.

The age of consent, in Canada, is 16.

Changing the age of majority would change when they become 'adults'.
